Rivian R2's Best Colors Just Landed in the Configurator: Forest Green and Borealis Purple
Share
Rivian has finally opened up the full color palette for the R2, its mid-size electric SUV. As of this month, two new exterior shades—Forest Green and Borealis purple—are live in the online configurator, along with a lighter cabin option called Coastal Cloud Signature. If you've been sitting on a reservation waiting to see the paint you actually wanted, this is the update you've been holding out for.
What happened
Forest Green is a $1,500 option, matching the price of Half Moon Grey, which was already on the menu. Borealis purple sits at the top of the range at $2,000, alongside Midnight black, Catalina Cove blue, and Launch Green. Glacier White runs $1,000, and Esker Silver remains the no-cost standard color.
There's a catch on availability. Forest Green can be specced on the Performance, Premium, and Standard Long Range R2s. Borealis purple is reserved for the top-spec Performance trim only. Inside, the new Coastal Cloud Signature interior is a $1,000 add-on and is limited to the Premium and Performance versions, while the darker Black Crater Signature stays the default.
Rivian described the new green as an attempt to capture the way light moves through a tree canopy.
"Forest Green is the deep green of a canopy seen from below, with enough metallic flake in the paint to catch light the way leaves do when shifting with the wind." — Rivian
The Coastal Cloud interior goes the opposite direction from the standard cabin: lighter, airier, less serious. Rivian says it's still built for real use thanks to second-generation Advantex material, which can be wiped down after a messy drive.
Where the R2 lineup stands right now
Only one version is actually shipping today: the R2 Performance Launch Edition, starting at $59,485. That gets you a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup making 656 horsepower with an EPA-estimated 330 miles of range. The Launch package also bundles in the Tow Package, a Launch key fob, and lifetime access to Rivian's Autonomy+ driver assistance platform.
The mid-tier Premium trim arrives later this year from $55,485. It keeps the same 330 miles of range but drops to 450 hp, and the Tow Package and Autonomy+ become paid extras. The entry-level Standard Rear-Wheel Drive is the one most shoppers are waiting for: $46,485, an estimated 275 miles of range, and 350 hp, with production starting next year.
Why it matters
Color availability sounds like a small thing until you're the one configuring a $50,000-plus vehicle and the shade you want is grayed out. Rivian launching the R2 with a partial palette meant a lot of early reservation holders were choosing between compromise and waiting. Unlocking the full set—especially Borealis, which has been the enthusiast favorite since the R2 was revealed—removes a real friction point from the order process.
It also signals that Rivian's R2 production line is maturing. Adding paint options and a second interior colorway takes manufacturing capacity and supply chain confidence. That's a good sign for anyone waiting on a Premium or Standard delivery slot.
What this means for EV owners
If you're speccing an R2 right now, two of these choices have practical downstream consequences worth thinking about before you hit confirm.
- A light interior needs a plan. Coastal Cloud looks fantastic in photos, and Advantex genuinely does wipe clean—but light seats still show everything in the meantime. Floor liners, seat-back protectors, and a small cleaning kit in the trunk go a long way toward keeping a white cabin looking new past year one.
- Metallic paint rewards protection. Forest Green's metallic flake is the whole point of the color, and it's the first thing dulled by swirl marks from bad wash habits. If you're paying $1,500 for the finish, budget for the care that keeps it looking like the configurator render.
The bigger one, though, is charging. A 330-mile SUV is only convenient if you're waking up full. Home Level 2 charging is what turns any new EV from a logistics problem into an appliance, and it's the single accessory purchase that changes daily ownership the most. Our EV chargers collection covers 40A to 80A wall-mounted Level 2 units, including the AC Pro 80A residential charger for owners with the panel capacity to use it. Before you buy, confirm which connector your R2 ships with and check our adapters collection if you plan to use charging networks outside your vehicle's native standard.
And no matter what badge is on the hood, the boring gear matters. A portable tire inflator, a reliable cable organizer so your charging cord isn't living in a heap in the frunk, and basic roadside kit are the things owners wish they'd bought before they needed them, not after.
The bottom line
Rivian's R2 configurator is finally complete: Forest Green at $1,500, Borealis purple at $2,000 on Performance only, and the Coastal Cloud Signature interior at $1,000 on Premium and Performance. Esker Silver is still free if you'd rather put the money elsewhere. With Premium orders opening later this year and the $46,485 Standard following next year, now is a good time to figure out what you want on the outside—and what you'll need in the garage once it shows up.
