Federal EV Tax Credits & State Incentives Guide 2026
Federal EV Tax Credits & State Incentives 2026
Buying an EV in 2026? You may qualify for up to $7,500 in federal tax credits plus thousands more from your state. Here is everything you need to know.
The IRA extended and expanded the Clean Vehicle Credit through 2032. New requirements apply — read below to check eligibility.
Federal Clean Vehicle Credit (Form 8936)
The federal EV tax credit provides up to $7,500 for new electric vehicles and up to $4,000 for used EVs purchased from a dealer. Key requirements for 2026:
Income Limits
- Single filers: Modified AGI must be under $150,000
- Head of household: Under $225,000
- Joint filers: Under $300,000
The income limit is checked against the lower of your current-year or prior-year MAGI — whichever is smaller.
Vehicle Price Caps
- Sedans, wagons, and hatchbacks: MSRP under $55,000
- SUVs, trucks, and vans: MSRP under $80,000
North American Assembly Requirement
The vehicle must be assembled in North America. Many popular EVs qualify — check the IRS Clean Vehicle Credit list at irs.gov before purchasing.
Point-of-Sale Credit Transfer
As of 2024, you can transfer your tax credit to the dealer at the point of sale, effectively getting the credit as an upfront price reduction rather than waiting for your tax return.
Used EV Tax Credit
Up to $4,000 (or 30% of purchase price, whichever is less) for used EVs purchased from a licensed dealer. Requires:
- Vehicle must be at least 2 model years old
- Purchase price under $25,000
- Income limits: $75,000 single / $150,000 joint
- First time claiming this specific credit for this specific vehicle
State Incentives by State
Many states stack additional credits on top of the federal credit. Notable 2026 state programs:
CVRP rebates up to $7,500 for income-eligible buyers. Additional Clean Air Vehicle stickers for HOV lane access.
Up to $2,000 Drive Clean Rebate at point of sale. No income cap for the state rebate.
$5,000 state tax credit for new EVs. One of the most generous state programs in the country.
Light Duty Motor Vehicle Purchase or Lease Incentive Program — check txdot.gov for current availability.
$4,000 rebate through the Illinois Electric Vehicle Rebate Program (income-based eligibility).
Check the AFDC state incentive database at afdc.energy.gov/laws/state for your state's current programs.
Utility Company Rebates
Many utility companies offer additional rebates for purchasing a Level 2 home charger or EV. These range from $100 to $500 in most service areas. Contact your utility provider or visit their website and search "EV rebate" to find current offers.
Home Charger Tax Credit
The Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit (Form 8911) provides a 30% credit up to $1,000 for purchasing and installing a Level 2 home EV charger. This applies to EVSE installed at your primary or secondary residence.
