XPENG Pushes Physical AI Further: VLA 2.0 v6.3.0, Robotaxi, and a $2.91B Quarter

If you drive an EV, you already know the car you bought isn't the car you'll be driving in two years. Over-the-air updates keep changing the deal — sometimes for the better, sometimes in ways that quietly move the goalposts. That's why XPENG's announcements over the past week are worth a read even if you're a Tesla owner with no plans to switch badges.
According to a report from CleanTechnica, XPENG rolled out a cluster of updates covering its IRON humanoid robot, its VLA 2.0 intelligent driving stack, and its financial picture. Most of it hasn't shown up in revenue or profit yet, but it points at where the company is heading: less "automaker that writes software," more "technology company that happens to build cars."
The Numbers Behind the Ambition
XPENG's second-quarter results landed earlier last week. Revenue came in at $2.91 billion, up 8.0% year over year and a striking 51.5% over Q1. Gross margin reached 20.7%, up from 17.3% in 2025 — and for comparison, CleanTechnica notes Tesla posted a gross margin of 16.8%.
The asterisk matters, though. A large chunk of that margin came from services, not cars. Vehicle margin actually fell to 12.1%, down from 14% a year earlier, partly because of the costs of launching new models. The bulk of the services revenue comes from "technical R&D services" supplied to Volkswagen Group — which is a genuinely interesting line item for a company that was, not long ago, purely a vehicle manufacturer.
The quarter still ended in a net loss of $200 million. Most of that traces to a 35% increase in R&D spending, plus higher administrative and selling costs tied to global expansion and multiple model launches (including the July L03 launch in Munich). Expensive now; the payoff, in theory, arrives as those models ramp and deliveries start.
What's Actually New in VLA 2.0 Version 6.3.0
On Thursday, XPENG announced the first major upgrade since VLA 2.0 launched, with an OTA rollout expected in the coming weeks. The engineering constraint here is one every EV owner should appreciate: a driving update has to be safe, reliable, and fast, and it has to run on the hardware already sitting in the car. A software leap that needs hardware you don't own isn't a leap at all.
The headline changes:
- 4D perception. Beyond understanding the space around the car, the updated model factors in time — using what has happened to predict what will happen.
- Infini-VLA. Supports infinitely long historical timelines during decision making, though XPENG caps practical memory at 30 seconds, having found that more is typically unnecessary while driving.
- Updated Streaming Inference. Seeing, thinking, and outputting trajectory tokens simultaneously and continuously, for a claimed 300% improvement in latency and response speed.
- X-Foresight. Announced back in June and now going public, it infers and predicts 6 seconds into the future for what XPENG calls "proactive reasoning." It can technically reach 21 seconds, but is limited to 6 to conserve computing power.
- Flow-Matching. Converts data into multiple possible future paths and makes probabilistic decisions for the best outcome.
XPENG says the combination delivers a 20x improvement in safety performance, describing the result as "better than human" for its human-like intelligent driving system. As always with manufacturer-supplied safety multipliers, treat the number as a claim rather than an independently verified fact.
The most advanced capabilities are reserved for models with multiple in-house Turing chips — but VLA capability is also coming to single-chip cars, using an approach called HybridViT that reworks the underlying architecture instead of simply trimming features.
Robotaxi, Quietly Racking Up Miles
XPENG is running L4 Robotaxi operation on the same hardware, with over 2,000 Robotaxi orders completed on public roads in the past period — to internal customers, for now. Chinese intelligent driving regulations are stricter than those in the US, but XPENG expects broader commercialization soon.
The Takeaway for EV Owners
Two things stand out. First, the "same hardware, better software" philosophy is becoming table stakes across the industry, not a Tesla-only story — which is good news if you plan to keep your car past the warranty. Second, more capable driver assistance doesn't reduce the value of the basics in your trunk. Cameras and prediction models still can't change a tire, jump a dead 12-volt battery, or light up a dark shoulder at 11pm.
Whatever your badge, keep the fundamentals covered: a portable jump starter, a tire inflator with an accurate gauge, reflective triangles or LED road flares, and the charging adapters that match the plugs you actually encounter. Software gets smarter every quarter. Roadside gear is what handles the quarter it doesn't.
