What Tesla FSD V14 Still Can't Do — And the Gear That Fills the Gaps

Long-term owner reviews are worth more than launch-day hot takes, and CleanTechnica just published a good one. Arthur Frederick (Fritz) Hasler has been driving a base 2026 Tesla Model Y on "Full Self Driving" V14 since May 26 — three months of real miles — after six-plus years of running earlier FSD versions on a 2019 Model 3. His verdict: V14 is a huge leap. But there's still a short list of things it can't do, and most of them happen in the exact moments when you're closest to your driveway, your parking spot, and your stuff.
The big upgrade: FSD now handles the start and end of the trip
The headline change in V14, per Hasler, is that FSD finally covers the bookends of a drive. Sitting in his garage, he asks the car to navigate to a Walmart 30 miles away, taps the brake, and presses the right scroll wheel to "Start Self-Driving." Without touching the wheel, brake, or accelerator, the Model Y backs out of the garage, makes a three-point turn, and exits a tree-lined gravel driveway on its own.
From there it handles the route: slowing for sharp turns, obeying town speed limits, stopping at stop signs and lights, following traffic at a comfortable distance, passing slower vehicles on multi-lane roads, and returning to the right lane. Near the destination, it offers a choice of Pull Over, Street, Driveway, or Parking Lot — and for Walmart it picks the parking lot automatically, finds a spot, backs in, and stops.
He's equally complimentary about the driving itself compared to late-version V12:
Most of the time it is like turning over the driving to a professional driver who is exercising all of his/her skills.
Specifically, he credits V14 with centering the car precisely in the lane, making accurate wide turns, easing left the right amount for pedestrians, bikes, parked cars, and construction vehicles, threading construction barrels, handling roundabouts, braking for deer near and crossing the road, and anticipating pedestrians at crosswalks.
What V14 still can't do
Here's the part accessory shoppers should pay attention to. Hasler's gaps cluster almost entirely around arrival and the last hundred feet:
- Arrival isn't optimized. Departures from a driveway or parking place are "almost always perfectly" executed, but arrival is "more complex and not necessarily optimal."
- It won't pick the right parking spot. It doesn't find the space closest to your preferred door at Walmart.
- It doesn't know about accessibility needs. Hasler has handicapped plates; the car has no idea.
- Coming home is harder than leaving. On the return trip it may not find his driveway — and it will not park in his garage.
There's also a change in how you control speed. On earlier FSD versions, the right scroll wheel let you dial in an exact speed. In V14 it selects a driving profile instead: Mad Max, Hurry, Standard, Chill, or Sloth. Hasler's read on each — Mad Max allows up to 20 mph over the limit (and, as he dryly notes, "don't expect sympathy from the police"), Hurry runs roughly 7–10 mph over, Standard sits at 5 mph over ("no ticket in most places"), Chill holds the posted limit, and Sloth crawls along for deer-watching and antique-store spotting. He usually runs Hurry or Standard depending on local enforcement, and says the upside is he's no longer constantly twiddling the scroll wheel like he did on older software.
Why this matters if you're outfitting a Tesla
The pattern in this review is consistent: FSD V14 is strongest on the open road and weakest in the parking lot and the driveway. That's a useful lens for deciding where to spend on accessories, because the gaps FSD leaves are the ones a driver still has to close manually.
- Parking and low-speed maneuvering. Since the car may not find your driveway on the way home and won't put itself in the garage, you're still the one docking it. Parking sensors and camera-clarity gear, plus clean, protected camera lenses, earn their keep here.
- Getting in and out of the car. If FSD can't grab the accessible spot near the door, the walk from the car matters more. Door edge guards, illuminated door sills, and grab-friendly interior touches are small quality-of-life wins.
- Cross-country trips. Hasler bought Tesla again specifically because he does a couple of cross-country trips a year and trusts the Supercharger network on US Interstates. That's a road-trip use case: adapters for non-Tesla stations, a portable Level 2 charger for cabins and motels, and cargo organization for a car that spends days loaded.
- Rural and wildlife-heavy driving. V14 brakes for deer, but Hasler's whole test loop is Northern Wisconsin two-lane roads and gravel driveways. Roadside safety kits, a tire inflator, and jump-start gear are cheap insurance where cell service and tow trucks are thin.
- Hauling gear. One of the photos in the review shows the Model Y with a mountain e-bike — a reminder that hitch racks and trunk protection are as much a part of the ownership experience as the software.
The takeaway
Hasler's review is worth reading in full, and his framing is the honest one: V14 is a dramatic improvement that now handles door-to-door driving in a way earlier versions simply couldn't, and he's comfortable enough with it that he's stopped micromanaging the controls. But "door-to-door" still has an asterisk at the door. It won't park where you'd park, it doesn't know your plates, and it won't put your car away in the garage.
Which is the practical bottom line for owners: the software is doing more of the highway, and you're still doing the driveway. Kit your car for the part you're still driving.
