Waymo Says Cameras 'Aren't Enough' — A Direct Shot at Tesla's Self-Driving Playbook

Waymo never said the word "Tesla." It didn't need to. In a blog post published Wednesday, Waymo's vice president of onboard software, Srikanth Thirumalai, laid out 10 lessons from 200 million autonomous miles — and one by one, those lessons pick apart the core beliefs behind Tesla's Full Self-Driving program.
The timing is pointed. Tesla appears to have removed safety operators from its Robotaxi service in several markets, and it has a Cybercab launch event scheduled for next week. Waymo picked this moment to argue, more explicitly than it has before, that Tesla is climbing the wrong mountain.
The Sensor Fight, Out in the Open
Start with hardware, because that's where the two companies split hardest. Tesla drives on cameras alone, and Elon Musk has famously called lidar a "fools errand." Waymo's latest system, in its Ojai van, carries 13 cameras, four lidar units, six radars and microphones on top of that.

Thirumalai's case is a division-of-labor argument rather than an anti-camera one. Lidar, he writes, captures 3D geometry with millimeter precision. Radar tracks velocity and picks out objects in conditions cameras struggle with, like heavy fog. Cameras are the ones reading street signs and traffic lights. In Waymo's framing, "multimodal sensors are indispensable" — the point is redundancy, not any single sensor winning.
Maps and the "Black Box" Problem
Two more shots land in the same post. Waymo leans on HD maps, which Tesla says it doesn't need; Thirumalai calls those highly detailed maps "incredibly helpful in poor visibility and complex thoroughfares."
Then there's end-to-end AI — raw pixels in one side, steering commands out the other — which sits at the heart of Tesla's approach and has been picked up by other developers too.

That last one is the deepest cut. Tesla's long-standing pitch is that FSD (Supervised), fed by data from a huge customer fleet, will eventually get good enough to take the human out of the loop. Waymo's counterargument: a system only truly matures when it is solely responsible for the driving task. You can log billions of supervised or simulated miles, Thirumalai writes, but full autonomy "exposes the system to the true gravity of its decisions" and surfaces novel situations that humans or simulations quietly smooth over.
Who's Actually Ahead Right Now
Of course Waymo thinks Waymo is right. But the scoreboard has real numbers on it: Waymo is running more than 500,000 driverless trips per week. Tesla's counter is scale of a different kind — a simpler, cheaper sensor suite that's far easier to mass-produce, which is exactly the bet Cybercab represents. It's not clear yet what next week's event will actually include.
Neither approach has been settled by argument. The next few years of real-world miles will do that.
What This Means for Tesla Owners Today
Nothing in Waymo's blog post changes your car. But it's a good reminder of something practical: if you drive a Tesla, your cameras are the whole sensor suite. Every FSD nag, Autopilot dropout, and blurry Sentry Mode clip traces back to what those lenses can see. Keeping the repeaters, the rear camera and the windshield genuinely clean is the single cheapest thing you can do for camera performance — especially through road-salt season and summer bug season.

Waymo just made its clearest public case yet that camera-only, map-free, end-to-end autonomy is a dead end — and it made it a week before Tesla's Cybercab event, which is not an accident. Tesla is betting that simplicity scales faster than redundancy. Until one of them is proven wrong on public roads, the useful takeaway for owners is smaller and more immediate: clean cameras and reliable footage storage are the two things fully within your control.
