Tesla held its Cybercab launch event in Austin on the evening of September 3, giving invited guests rides in the purpose-built Robotaxi and a close-up look at the hardware underneath it. The gathering came after weeks of drip-fed details, following Tesla's confirmation of the event date and the invitations that went out to attendees.
The catch for everyone else: there was no public livestream, and no advance warning that one wouldn't happen. Viewers around the world sat waiting on an official feed that never showed up. Tesla employees reportedly had access to an internal feed, but that was it.
Another surprise — Elon Musk wasn't there. Lead engineering handled the presentation instead, with Tesla's VP of AI, Ashok Elluswamy, out front. And despite plenty of online speculation that Tesla might use the stage to show off Optimus or some other unannounced product, the event stayed locked on Cybercab.
What Tesla Shared at the Event
Hardware and engineering were the main attraction. Display stands let attendees get close to the components that make Cybercab work, including:
- The integrated Starlink V5 terminal
- Supermanifold v3
- The drive unit
- A look at the unboxed assembly process Cybercab is built with
- Cybercab's more capable FSD computer
That FSD computer is the one enthusiasts have been circling. Exact specifications remain unconfirmed, but it's already been reported that it carries more memory than Hardware 4. Tesla is also developing its primary FSD models for Cybercab hardware first, then creating reduced versions for HW4 — a detail worth filing away if you're thinking about where your current car sits in the software pipeline.
Other details covered on the night included Cybercab's steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire controls, the 22-inch cabin display, and accessibility features. Invitees got rides, and Tesla announced that Cybercab would join the Austin Robotaxi fleet the following day. Earlier that same day, Tesla had rolled out an updated Robotaxi app with new features and Cybercab support.

It's still unclear whether Musk's absence factored into the decision not to stream live. Either way, the recording is the record — and it's a solid 15 minutes if you want to see the drive unit, the manifold, and the by-wire controls explained by the people who built them.
What This Means for Owners
Cybercab is a purpose-built Robotaxi, so most of what was shown isn't something you'll bolt onto a Model 3 or Model Y. But the direction of travel matters. Steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire, a bigger cabin display, and an FSD computer with more memory than HW4 all point to where Tesla's engineering attention is going — and the note about primary FSD models being built for Cybercab hardware first is the kind of detail that shapes expectations for HW4 cars over the next few update cycles.
For now, your Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X, or Cybertruck keeps running the hardware it shipped with, and the accessories that matter day to day haven't changed: a reliable mobile connector and adapters for the charging networks you actually use, cabin organization that survives a road trip, and roadside safety gear in the frunk for the day you need it. Robotaxis or not, those are still the things that make ownership easier this week.
