The Boring Company's New Tunnel Truck Runs on Model 3 Batteries and Drive Units

If you have ever wondered how far Tesla's hardware can stretch beyond the driveway, The Boring Company just gave a pretty vivid answer. The tunneling company unveiled Liner Truck 3 on its official X account, and the spec sheet reads like a Model 3 that decided to go into construction.
It is a fully electric tunnel vehicle built around Tesla Model 3 battery packs and drive units, designed to haul precast concrete tunnel segments to the boring machine face. The twist: there is no one behind the wheel, and no one in the tunnel at all.
What Liner Truck 3 actually does
The job is unglamorous but critical. Each run of precast segments weighs more than 22,000 pounds, roughly the load of a full cement mixer, and Liner Truck 3 shuttles that weight back and forth between the surface staging area and wherever the Prufrock boring machine happens to be cutting.

Twelve miles per hour and 28 miles of range would be laughable numbers on a road car. Underground, hauling eleven tons on a repeating shuttle loop, they are exactly right. This is a purpose-built machine, and the Model 3 drivetrain happens to be the cheapest, most proven way to get instant torque and serviceable parts into it.
Nobody in the tunnel
The remote piloting piece is the part that will get the most attention. The Boring Company says Liner Truck 3 is operated out of its Global Operations Control Center in Texas, extending the Zero-People-In-Tunnel approach the company has been building toward for years.
This is not a brand-new idea for them. An earlier ZPIT liner truck was already tested at the company's Bastrop, Texas research tunnels, and a factory tour released last month showed an employee flying a fully loaded liner truck with a PlayStation controller. Liner Truck 3 looks like the production version of that same concept, cleaned up and pushed into daily service.

Why now
The timing tracks with a company digging in more places than it ever has. The Boring Company now has multiple Prufrock machines active or arriving in Nashville, where Music City Loop construction has been accelerating since February, and the Vegas Loop network keeps adding tunnel mileage on a near-monthly basis.
Every one of those projects depends on getting concrete segments to the cutting face fast enough to keep the boring machine from idling. That bottleneck is exactly what Liner Truck 3 is built to remove.
What it means for Tesla owners
For those of us who follow Tesla hardware closely, this reinforces a pattern that has been building gradually across Musk's companies: passenger car components finding a second life in heavy equipment. Model 3 drive units already move people through the Vegas Loop. Now the same components are hauling concrete underground in Nashville and wherever The Boring Company digs next.
There is something quietly reassuring in that. The drive unit in your Model 3 is durable enough that an industrial contractor picked it to move eleven tons of concrete, thousands of times, in a dusty tunnel. That is not a marketing claim. That is a purchasing decision.
It also speaks to the broader accessory ecosystem around these cars. Standardized, widely available Tesla components are what make everything from replacement parts to third-party upgrades practical and affordable. The more places Model 3 hardware shows up, the deeper that parts and accessory ecosystem gets for everyone who owns one.
The bottom line
Liner Truck 3 is not something you will ever park in your garage, but it is a genuinely interesting look at where Tesla's core hardware ends up. Whether that component reuse spreads further into The Boring Company's equipment lineup, or into other Musk-owned industrial hardware, is the next thing worth watching.
