Tesla & SpaceX to Build TERAFAB in Grimes County, Texas

Tesla and SpaceX have finally answered the question that's been circling for months: where will TERAFAB actually go? The answer is Grimes County, Texas — roughly an hour northwest of Houston and about two hours from Gigafactory Texas. Both companies confirmed the site this week, and Tesla marked the occasion with an official post on X plus a concept video of the future facility.

The joint venture laid its early groundwork in Austin earlier this spring, so this announcement is less a surprise and more a confirmation of where all the pieces have been quietly pointing.
A Footprint That's Genuinely Hard to Picture
TERAFAB isn't just big for a chip plant — it's big for a building, period. According to site plans, the facility will span more than 100 million square feet of manufacturing space under a single roof.
Tesla watcher @niccruzpatane put together a size comparison that helps it land: TERAFAB could fit ten Giga Texas factories inside its footprint. The same single building would swallow the U.S. Pentagon, Apple Park, and the Mall of America combined, with plenty of room left over.
Here's how the project breaks down by the numbers:
- Initial capital investment: approximately $16.8 billion from SpaceX and Tesla combined
- Potential total investment: up to $119 billion across future expansion phases
- Initial headcount: at least 3,000 workers, many expected to come from local Grimes and Brazos County communities
- Compute target: more than 1 terawatt of compute per year
Everything Under One Roof
The more interesting story may be the layout rather than the size. Traditional chipmakers split manufacturing, packaging, and testing across separate buildings, separate companies, and often separate continents. TERAFAB is designed to bring logic devices, memory, and advanced packaging together in one place, with the goal of enabling the shortest validation and iteration cycles the chipmaking industry has seen.
As for where all that silicon goes, Elon Musk offered a rough split on X: "My very approximate guess is that Terafab AI compute output would be ~25% for Tesla Optimus and ~75% for AI spacecraft." In practice, that means chips destined for Tesla's upcoming Optimus humanoid robots and autonomous Cybercabs, plus the orbital AI data centers SpaceX is working to put into space.
Cutting the Cord on Outside Suppliers
Building TERAFAB is a direct move to reduce Tesla and SpaceX's dependence on suppliers like TSMC and Samsung for the chips that serve as the brains of their products. Siting it in Texas also expands domestic manufacturing capacity and brings advanced semiconductor packaging back to U.S. soil.
On the environmental side, the factory will draw from Gibbons Creek Reservoir for industrial water rather than tapping local groundwater, supported by on-site wastewater treatment. SpaceX had previously filed plans for a TERAFAB facility at Gibbons Creek Reservoir, which was the clearest hint yet that Grimes County would be the landing spot.
Tesla and SpaceX are also partnering with Intel for silicon expertise, and the project recently poached a high-profile first hire from the veteran chipmaker. Together with the research fab already underway on the North Campus at Giga Texas, it gives real shape to the plans announced at the dedicated TERAFAB event earlier this year.
What It Means for Tesla Owners
Nothing here changes what's in your driveway tomorrow. TERAFAB is infrastructure, and infrastructure of this size takes years to come online. But it's a useful signal about where Tesla is placing its long-term bets: in-house compute at enormous scale, aimed squarely at autonomy and robotics rather than incremental improvements to today's cars.
For owners, that's worth keeping an eye on. If Tesla's compute pipeline scales the way the company is planning, the pace of FSD and Cybercab development is the place you'd expect to feel it first — and a vertically integrated supply chain sitting two hours from Giga Texas is a very different situation than waiting in line at an overseas foundry.
