Tesla Says Robotaxi Has Now Driven 1 Million Unsupervised Miles

Tesla announced this week that its Robotaxi fleet has crossed 1 million miles driven without a human supervising the car. VP of Autopilot/AI Ashok Elluswamy shared the number at Tesla's Cybercab event, saying, "I'm happy to announce that we have achieved 1 million miles of unsupervised Robotaxi operation."

That's more than double the figure Tesla gave just six weeks earlier, and it's worth understanding exactly what's being counted here — because "unsupervised" is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

What "unsupervised" actually means

In this context, unsupervised means the car and its onboard software are handling all of the sensing and control, with no human in the loop anywhere in the chain of command. That's different from Tesla's human-driven ride-hailing service in the Bay Area, which is branded as Robotaxi but is really Tesla employees driving Model Ys with FSD engaged some of the time. The million-mile number refers to the genuinely driverless miles.

It's also a big change from where the service started. When Robotaxi launched in Austin in June 2025, every car had a "safety driver" sitting up front with access to vehicle controls. Tesla later moved those minders into a chase car, and now relies mostly on occasional remote control of the vehicles instead.

The numbers, in context

  • On the Q2 earnings call July 22, Tesla reported 380,000 total unsupervised miles.
  • Six weeks later, that figure is 1 million — roughly 620,000 miles added in a month and a half.
  • Tesla didn't do any unsupervised miles at all until the beginning of this year; now nearly all of its non-Bay-Area miles are unsupervised.
  • Waymo announced last week that it has driven 200 million miles across 14 cities, and first crossed the million-mile mark back in 2023.

So the growth curve is real, but the sample size is still small. A million miles is less than the average American drives in a lifetime. Tesla also claimed on the Q2 call that it had seen "zero notable incidents" in its unsupervised miles, though at least 17 incidents had been noted in government documents as of May.

Cybercab and what comes next

Part of Tesla's growth plan rests on the Cybercab, which was the centerpiece of this week's event. Reports suggest only 45 Cybercabs have been registered for deployment in Austin so far — roughly a tenth of the Model Y Robotaxis already registered in the city, and only a fraction of those are in service at any given moment. Tesla also began courting business clients at the event, pitching commercial use cases for the technology.

Paid ridership had actually flattened out last quarter at around 900,000 added miles in each of the previous two quarters, against a total of roughly 2.5 million paid Robotaxi miles. With 620,000 unsupervised miles added in six weeks alone, this quarter looks likely to return to growth.

What this means if you own a Tesla

Here's the part that stings a little for owners: Tesla still isn't letting customers use unsupervised autonomy in the cars they bought. The million-mile milestone applies to Tesla's own geofenced fleet, not to your Model 3, Model Y, or Cybertruck sitting in the driveway. If you paid for FSD, you're still the supervisor, hands ready and eyes on the road.

Practically, that means the accessories that make supervised driving comfortable and safe are still the ones that matter day to day. A solid phone mount that keeps navigation in your line of sight, a quality dash cam setup with a reliable drive for Sentry and Dashcam footage, and a well-organized center console keep your attention where it belongs. Same goes for charging: a home charging cable you trust, the right adapters for road trips, and roadside safety gear in the frunk are the difference between a smooth trip and a stressful one — regardless of how many miles Tesla's fleet racks up in Austin.

Autonomy is clearly moving, and the six-week jump is genuinely notable. But the technology still has to prove itself outside small geofenced areas before it changes anything about how you drive your own car. Until then, gear up for the drive you're actually doing.
