Tesla's Robovan Resurfaces in Musk's New Terafab Video Alongside Optimus

Elon Musk posted a new Terafab concept video on X Thursday morning, and while the building itself is the headline, EV watchers zeroed in on something else: the Robovan. Tesla's boxy, driverless people mover glides along an elevated roadway that cuts straight through the facility, sharing the frame with a Tesla Semi and a Cybercab, while Optimus robots work the grounds.

The render, credited to SpaceX, depicts the roughly 2.5-mile-long facility planned for the Gibbons Creek site in Grimes County, Texas. Less than a day after posting, the clip had crossed 5.5 million views.

Why the Robovan Cameo Matters

Musk unveiled Robovan alongside Cybercab at Tesla's "We, Robot" event in October 2024. The pitch: move up to 20 passengers at once, or haul freight instead, at a target cost Musk claimed could fall under a dollar a mile. No steering wheel, no pedals — the same layout as Cybercab.

Nearly two years later, Robovan still has no confirmed production timeline and has not appeared in any factory footage. That makes this render one of the only recent looks at the vehicle in any form. It's worth being clear about what that means: this is concept art, not a production preview. Nothing here moves Robovan closer to a delivery date.

Optimus Is Further Along

The Terafab Money Is Real, Even If the Render Isn't

Behind the concept art, the project is moving. Terafab's tax abatement agreements with Grimes County are signed and active, and SpaceX has sent the county its first $10 million payment under that deal. Reuters puts the dollar figure tied to this phase of construction at $16.8 billion — one of the first hard capital expenditure numbers attached to Terafab since Musk unveiled the joint Tesla-SpaceX-xAI venture in March.

The timing tracks with what Terafab representative Riley Trennell told Grimes County residents on Wednesday, when he said renderings would be released "within days." Musk's post followed less than 24 hours later, and Texas Governor Greg Abbott's office sent out its own release Thursday confirming the project.

The architecture is a genuine departure from Tesla's usual look. The facade is canted at sharp angles, with illuminated horizontal bands running through a multi-level interior visible from outside. Pedestrians walk a plaza next to a reflecting pool below the elevated roadway, and angular spires dot the skyline behind the campus — closer to sculpture than to the strictly utilitarian feel of Gigafactory Texas or Starbase.

What It Means for Owners Today

Reaction on X ran from "God Bless Texas! Everything is bigger and better in Texas!" to a much drier "Terafab in a decade….." Both are fair. Renders are marketing, and the gap between a beautiful clip and a finished building is measured in years.

For anyone driving a Tesla right now, the practical takeaway is simple: nothing in this video changes your garage. Robovan and Cybercab are still products without steering wheels and without ship dates, and the accessories that matter to you are the ones that fit the car in your driveway today — charging cables and adapters, cabin storage, screen protectors, and roadside safety gear. The steering-wheel-free future is a render. Your Model 3, Model Y, or Cybertruck is not.

If there's a reason to pay attention, it's this: the same design language showing up in Terafab renders — flat panels, hard angles, minimal controls — is the language Tesla has already been applying to its cars. Watching what Musk shows off is a decent, if imperfect, preview of where interior and exterior design is heading next.
