Tesla's FSD Lite Is Reportedly Missing Downed Trees and Logs — Here's Why Supervision Still Matters

If you drive a Tesla with Hardware 3 and you've been trying out FSD Lite, this one's worth a read. Over the past week, two different Tesla owners posted videos on X showing their cars apparently failing to react to large obstacles sitting in the middle of the road — specifically, a fallen tree and a wooden log. In both cases, the software was FSD v14.1 Lite.
InsideEVs reported on the videos on August 25. The first, posted August 21 by an X user named Baldersonmichae, shows a nighttime drive with a downed tree ahead in the roadway. According to the report, the car doesn't appear to notice the large mess of branches and leaves and doesn't slow down. The driver intervened and stopped the car manually to avoid hitting it.
What makes it more concerning is that it apparently wasn't a fluke. The driver says he returned to that same spot and tried it three more times, with the same result each time.
Further down in the comments, another Tesla owner posted a video that purports to show his FSD-equipped car striking a large log at 32 mph without stopping.
What Is FSD Lite, Exactly?
FSD Lite launched this past June. It's Tesla's attempt to bring more of the Hardware 4 driving experience to older cars running Hardware 3 — the computer and camera package Tesla introduced back in 2019.
The hardware gap is significant, and it explains a lot about why this version behaves differently:
- Cameras: Hardware 3 uses 1.2-megapixel cameras. Hardware 4, which arrived in cars built after 2023, uses 5-megapixel units.
- Memory: Hardware 3 has 8 GB of RAM. Hardware 4 has 16 GB per chip.
- Overall compute: Hardware 3 simply has significantly less processing power to work with.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk already acknowledged the ceiling here. On an earnings call earlier this year, he laid out the limitations of Hardware 3 and said the system won't be able to handle true self-driving whenever that capability launches for consumer vehicles.
Per the InsideEVs report, complaints about FSD Lite aren't hard to find online, ranging from FSD hardware overheating to vehicles not tracking properly within their lane.
The Name Is the Instruction Manual
There's a reason why it's called Full Self-Driving (Supervised), folks. Pay attention to the road.
That's the takeaway from InsideEVs, and it's hard to argue with. In the tree incident, the good news is that the driver was watching the road and stopped in time. The system is supervised by design — your hands, eyes, and judgment are part of the loop, not a backup for it.
This isn't a reason to panic if you own a Hardware 3 Model 3 or Model Y. It is a reason to treat FSD Lite as driver assistance rather than a chauffeur, especially at night, on rural roads, and after storms when debris is more likely to be sitting in a travel lane.
Practical Takeaways for Hardware 3 Owners
- Stay engaged at night. Both the low-resolution cameras and the reduced compute are working hardest in exactly the conditions where a dark, unlit obstacle blends into the road.
- Be extra alert after storms. Downed branches and logs are the specific failure mode showing up in these videos.
- Keep your cameras clean. A 1.2 MP camera has less margin to give up to road grime, salt spray, or a smeared lens. Wipe the pillar and front cameras when you clean the car.
- Know your hardware. If you bought your car before 2023, there's a good chance you're on Hardware 3 and that FSD Lite is what you're running.
- Carry roadside basics. If you do come across debris — or have to pull over unexpectedly — reflective triangles, a warning light, work gloves, and a flashlight turn a bad situation into a manageable one. A tire repair kit and a portable jump/12V pack are worth having in the frunk too.
Our Take
Tesla is pushing hard toward a larger self-driving fleet and the steering-wheel-free Cybercab, and FSD keeps improving in a lot of everyday scenarios. But these videos are a useful reminder that the older hardware has real limits, and that "Supervised" is doing genuine work in that product name.
Drive it like a very capable assistant that occasionally misses something big and stationary. Keep your eyes up, keep your hands ready, and keep a proper roadside kit in the car. That combination costs you very little and covers the gap that software hasn't closed yet.
