Tesla's Cybercab Launch Is Next Week. Here's What Tesla Still Needs To Prove

Tesla's Cybercab — the two-seat, scissor door-having robotaxi with no steering wheel — is apparently ready for primetime. The carmaker announced this week that it has scheduled an official launch event for next Thursday in Austin, and it's easily the most-watched Tesla reveal in years.

But an event isn't a shipping product. How quickly Cybercabs actually hit streets, and whether you'll be able to buy one for $30,000 anytime soon, are just some of the questions still hanging over this rollout. Here's what Tesla still has to prove.

1. That Camera-Only Autonomy Is Good Enough

The biggest question is software. Elon Musk is betting that Tesla can become an autonomous-vehicle juggernaut using cameras alone, and the Cybercab was built from the ground up around that gamble. How reliable that system is at scale remains an open question, and plenty of experts argue that sensor redundancy through lidar and radar is essential for safety.

Industry leader Waymo took a not-so-subtle shot at Tesla's strategy this week, saying in a blog post that cameras are "not enough" for safe autonomous driving at scale.

Waymo has logged over 200 million driverless miles and is doing more than 500,000 autonomous rides per week. Tesla has done in the neighborhood of 380,000 driverless miles, per its last earnings call.

To Tesla's credit, its Robotaxi service does now offer driverless Model Y rides in Austin and some other markets, and that part of the business appears to be growing. On X this week, Tesla said its "unsupervised fleet is a lot bigger" and that it had extended operating hours. Ethan McKanna of the crowdsourced Robotaxi Tracker website has detected a significant uptick in unsupervised rides, according to The Verge.

Still, the rollout has been far slower than promised. Last year it was supposed to be "hyper exponential" and cover half the U.S. population by the end of 2025. On recent earnings calls, Musk has struck an uncharacteristically reserved tone, noting the company is moving slowly to ensure safety.

2. That Cybercabs Can Scale Quickly

Even after the launch event, the Cybercab rollout may not be fast. Data is part of the reason.

"Because it is a new vehicle chassis," Musk said on Tesla's latest earnings call, "we need to accumulate driving data that is specific to the Cybercab before we can put a lot of them on the road."

That's why golden, human-driven Cybercabs with retrofitted steering wheels have been spotted all over the country. How long that data-gathering project takes is anyone's guess. There's another reason for caution, too: these are flashy, instantly recognizable cars, which means any misstep by Tesla's autonomous system will be on full display.

3. What Happened To The Wireless Charging Plan

This one matters to anyone who follows charging tech. Tesla has said the cabs would charge wirelessly, much like a phone does — presumably so they could operate with as little human intervention (and cost) as possible. The company even showed off a video of a robotic vacuum cleaning out a cab.

But lately we've heard little about the infrastructure or logistics required to operate Cybercabs, or what exactly is being built. Cybercabs have also been spotted testing with a conventional charging port, so the plans may have changed. If Tesla is quietly walking back inductive charging in favor of a physical plug, that's a meaningful signal about how far away hands-off fleet charging really is.

4. Whether You Can Actually Buy One

Remember that operating an Uber-like robotaxi network has always been just part of the Tesla pitch. Musk's core promise — the reason Tesla's market cap is over 10 times that of General Motors — is that this is the company that will make your car drive itself.

In 2024, Musk said anyone would be able to buy a Cybercab for $30,000 and add it to the Tesla network to earn side income. Right now, there is no vehicle you can buy with Level 4 capability, so that would be a huge milestone. It's not clear whether next week's event will include anything about public sales.

And while consumer-grade Full Self-Driving has clearly improved over the years, it still carries the (Supervised) caveat and sometimes botches the basics in frightening ways — like failing to brake for a giant tree in the road or a railroad crossing. There's also the open legal question of selling or deploying a vehicle without features typically required by federal motor vehicle safety standards.

What This Means For EV Owners Today

If you're driving a Model 3, Model Y, or Cybertruck right now, the Cybercab event is fascinating — but it doesn't change your daily routine. The practical takeaways are simpler:

  • Wireless charging isn't here yet. Even Tesla's purpose-built robotaxi appears to be hedging with a physical port. A quality Level 2 charger, a good J1772 or NACS adapter, and a well-managed home setup remain the real answer for daily charging.
  • FSD is still supervised. Whatever gets announced next Thursday, your car's system still expects your hands and your attention. Keep the driver's seat set up for actual driving.
  • Cable and connector care still matters. The unglamorous stuff — organized charging cables, a spare adapter in the frunk, and a charge port that stays clean — is what keeps an EV easy to live with, robotaxi era or not.
  • Roadside readiness doesn't go away. Autonomy headlines move fast; flat tires and dead 12-volt batteries don't care. A basic emergency kit is still the highest-value thing in your trunk.

We'll be watching next Thursday's event in Austin closely — especially for any detail on charging hardware, since that's the part most likely to trickle down into products EV owners can actually use. Until then, the Cybercab remains one of the most interesting vehicles nobody can buy.
