Tesla's Cybercab Is Testing an RGB Light Bar — Here's Why It Matters for Riders

Tesla's Cybercab is out in public more and more as fleet testing ramps up ahead of next week's launch event — and it's putting on a bit of a light show while it works.

A video shared on X by @artsimage, filmed with @AdanGuajardo, captured multiple Cybercab prototypes running real-world pickups and drop-offs in downtown Austin, Texas, while cycling colors across their front lighting strip. In the footage, one Cybercab glows a vivid amber-orange across its hood line while a second unit rolling right behind it shows off an emerald green hue.

The two-seater Cybercab was built from the ground up without a steering wheel or pedals to serve as the foundation of Tesla's Robotaxi network. Tesla has confirmed the official Cybercab launch event for September 3. Earlier this month, the front light bar was confirmed to be RGB after it appeared with red, white, and blue lighting during a tech showcase, and recent sightings gave us a look at the vehicle's split-screen UI.

Why a Color-Changing Light Bar Is Actually Useful

A programmable multi-color light bar is more than a party trick. It could solve a very real ride-hailing headache: when hundreds — or thousands, if Tesla gets its way — of identical gold Cybercabs flood a downtown pickup hub, finding your specific car becomes a mess. Instead of squinting at license plates, the Robotaxi app could simply tell you to look for the vehicle with the turquoise or purple light bar.

Other possibilities the source raises:

  • Communicating ride status — green when available, red when occupied
  • Showing charging progress at Tesla's planned Cybercab hubs, if the LEDs are individually addressable
  • Animated sweeps tied to specific functions, like signaling that it has spotted you

Regulations Will Set the Limits

There's a catch. Automotive lighting rules put strict guardrails on forward-facing colors on public roads. White and amber are standard for driving, but colors like red or blue risk being mistaken for emergency vehicles. Because of that, full-spectrum RGB effects may end up limited to moments when the Cybercab is parked, pulling over for passenger entry, or navigating private pickup lots.

Practical takeaway: expect the wild colors during pickup and drop-off, and conventional white and amber once the car is actually moving down the road.

Reflective Badging for Nighttime Pickups

Active lighting isn't the only trick. Photos shared on X by @AdanGuajardo highlight the Cybercab's reflective exterior details: a stylized Cybercab wordmark applied along the side doors and across the rear glass. Under direct headlight beams, the decals glow brightly in the dark.

The gold two-seater isn't exactly hard to spot with its futuristic silhouette, but high-visibility reflective graphics make picking out your approaching ride effortless on poorly lit streets.

What This Signals for Tesla Owners

Even if you'll never hail a Cybercab, this is a useful window into where Tesla is heading with exterior lighting and visibility. The company is clearly treating light bars and reflective graphics as functional communication tools, not just styling — the same thinking behind the light bars already found on Cybertruck and the refreshed Model 3 Highland and Model Y Juniper.

If you like the idea of being easier to spot at night, the aftermarket already covers a lot of this ground for current Teslas: reflective decals and door-edge tape, puddle and door-projector lights for a visible pool of light when you open up, ambient interior lighting kits, and trunk or frunk LED strips that make loading in a dark parking garage far less annoying. Reflective gear is also a smart addition to a roadside safety kit — if you ever have to stop on a shoulder, being seen matters more than anything else in the trunk.

With the official reveal just days away on September 3, expect more details on exactly how much of the RGB light bar's range Tesla is allowed to use — and how much of it shows up on future consumer vehicles.
