Tesla's Cybercab Is Now Driving Passengers Around Austin — And It's Refreshingly Boring

After years of promises, prototypes, and closed-course demos, Tesla's purpose-built Cybercab is finally doing the thing it was designed to do: carrying actual passengers on public roads. The location is Austin, Texas, and the early footage suggests the most radical Tesla ever built delivers a remarkably ordinary ride.

That's the highest compliment you can pay a driverless taxi.

What the First Ride Looked Like

Longtime Tesla content creator Sawyer Merritt posted a 14-minute video of himself and his wife riding through Austin in a Cybercab. Per InsideEVs, the process is about as simple as it gets: both passengers climb in, the butterfly doors close automatically, and you tap "Start Ride" on the central screen. The car pulls away smoothly and heads for the destination.

From there, almost nothing happened. The Cybercab handled the filmed portion of the route with no hesitation, no sudden braking, and no abrupt maneuvers. Merritt noted the suspension soaked up a speed bump cleanly and praised the overall ride quality, describing the experience as quiet, soft, and "perfectly boring."

The drive itself was almost eerily uneventful — exactly what you want from a car with no steering wheel and no pedals.

Inside the Cabin

Most of the video focuses on the interior, and it's more accommodating than the Cybercab's compact exterior suggests:

  • A two-seat bench that slides forward and back as a single unit
  • Recline-able backrests
  • Noticeably more legroom than you'd expect from the outside
  • A roughly 21-inch central screen that controls climate, seats, doors, and entertainment

The only stumble of the entire trip came from the AI voice assistant, Grok, which misread a request to adjust the cabin temperature as a request to change the destination. That's a software hiccup, not a safety one — but it's a reminder that voice control in cars still has room to grow.

One Good Ride Isn't the Whole Story

It's worth keeping perspective here. Merritt is an enthusiastic Tesla supporter, and his claim that the Cybercab already "drives better than a human" and needs no further development should be treated as one fan's opinion after one ride. InsideEVs makes that caveat explicitly.

A single trip through a limited, geofenced slice of Austin doesn't prove much about harder conditions: inclement weather, active roadworks, aggressive drivers, or the general unpredictability of real traffic. Navigating Austin is not the same as navigating New York City, with its denser traffic, heavier pedestrian activity, and constant obstructions.

Why This Still Matters

Even with the caveats, this is a genuine milestone for Tesla and for driverless ride-hailing in general. The timeline moved fast: the first production Cybercab rolled off the line in February. By June, Tesla was testing a steering-wheel-free version on Austin roads with a safety monitor riding in the passenger seat. Just before this week's launch, the company registered 45 Cybercabs in Texas.

The Cybercab is no longer a concept or a prototype. Real people are now sitting inside while it drives itself — and on this occasion, nothing exciting happened at all.

What It Means for EV Owners

If you drive a Model 3, Model Y, or Cybertruck today, the Cybercab isn't replacing your car anytime soon. But the trend it points to is worth noticing: cabins are becoming screen-first spaces where climate, seating, doors, and media all run through one display, and time in the car increasingly gets spent doing something other than driving.

That shift is already showing up in how owners kit out their vehicles. Screen protectors and anti-glare films for large center displays, secure phone mounts and fast in-cabin charging, storage and organizer trays that keep a minimalist interior usable, and comfort gear for passengers who now spend the drive looking at a screen instead of the road — all of it gets more useful as cars lean further into the lounge-on-wheels concept.

And no matter how good autonomy gets, the basics still apply. A quality mobile connector, the right charging adapters for the stations near you, and a roadside safety kit in the trunk remain the difference between a smooth trip and a stressful one. Boring is the goal — in your driveway just as much as in a Cybercab.
