Tesla's Cybercab Is Finally Giving Paid Robotaxi Rides — Here's What It Can and Can't Do

It finally happened. Tesla's Cybercab — the two-seat EV with no steering wheel and no pedals — is now giving paid Robotaxi rides in Austin, Texas. The gold-colored driverless pods went live after a closed-door launch event that traditional media wasn't invited to, and one that Elon Musk himself reportedly skipped.

If you've been following the Robotaxi promise for years, the mood here is a little mixed. The car is real and it's carrying paying passengers. But Tesla owners still can't enroll their own EVs in the fleet to earn passive income, and the rollout is smaller than the hype suggests. Here's the practical breakdown.

How Many Cybercabs Are Actually Out There?

Tesla didn't announce a fleet number, but recently published Texas Department of Motor Vehicles data shows the company has just 45 Cybercabs registered in the state. Across all six cities where Tesla runs driverless taxis, the total is roughly 250 vehicles.

For scale: Waymo, the largest robotaxi operator in the U.S., runs about 4,000 vehicles across 14 cities. So the Cybercab is a genuine milestone, but it's a very small pin on a very big map right now — and it's Austin-only for the moment.

Worth repeating, too: the Cybercab is not for sale yet. You can ride in one, but you can't buy one.

Who's Allowed to Ride

This is the part that surprises people, so read it before you plan an airport run with the family:

  • Children under 13 are not allowed in a Cybercab Robotaxi at all.
  • Minors aged 13–17 can ride only when accompanied by an adult.
  • Riders can only request a Robotaxi for themselves — you can't hail one remotely for someone else, so parents can't summon a ride for their kids.

By comparison, kids as young as eight can ride in a Model Y robotaxi when an adult is with them. If you're traveling with younger children in Austin, the Model Y fleet is the one to look for.

On the car seat question: the Cybercab has no ISOFIX or LATCH anchors. Tesla's documentation does show that one child seat can be installed using the vehicle's seat belt — which is irrelevant for robotaxi duty given the under-13 ban, but it hints at future-proofing for whenever the Cybercab is eventually sold to the public.

Cargo Space: Better Than You'd Guess

Two seats doesn't mean no room for stuff. The rear trunk offers 20.2 cubic feet of cargo volume, which Tesla says is enough for two checked bags plus two carry-ons. The trunk also handles one large folded stroller or one folded wheelchair.

The weight limit is 220 pounds (100 kilograms). That's generous for luggage, but it's a real ceiling worth remembering if you're moving gear rather than suitcases.

"80% of robotaxi rides are with two passengers; that's why the Cybercab only has two seats," a Tesla official said during the presentation.

The Ride Experience

Access is app-and-proximity based. The doors open automatically when the rider is nearby, or you can trigger them from the app. Once inside, doors open from the central touchscreen or from dedicated buttons on each door card. The trunk opens from the smartphone app as well.

Seating is a hybrid setup: the two backrests recline independently, but the seat base slides forward and backward as a single piece.

Tesla says your preferences follow you into the car. Cabin temperature and your streaming service accounts are loaded automatically based on your previous rides, then wiped from the vehicle when the ride ends. There's also Grok integration on board, so you can ask the AI assistant questions and get conversational answers. USB-C charging ports are available for topping off your phone en route.

Safety and Sensors

Inside the cabin you'll find a camera and a radar unit. The camera checks for cleanliness and lost items between rides — a nice touch if you're the type who leaves a phone on the seat. The cabin radar scans for occupants to determine how the airbags should deploy.

Airbag coverage is thorough for a two-seater: front airbags, knee airbags, seat-mounted side airbags, inner seat-mounted airbags, and curtain airbags.

For driving itself, the Cybercab is vision-only — no lidar, no external radar. Eight exterior cameras handle navigation: one front, one rear, one in each door pillar, and two at the top of the windshield.

What This Means If You Own a Tesla

The short version: nothing changes in your garage today. The promise that you'd one day add your own Model 3 or Model Y to the Robotaxi fleet and collect passive income is still unfulfilled. The Cybercab is a purpose-built vehicle in a Tesla-operated fleet, not a platform your car can join.

What it does signal is where Tesla is pointing its software and hardware — heavy reliance on cameras, app-driven access, and automatic profile syncing between you and the car. Those same ideas keep trickling into the cars people actually own, which is why the accessories that make your own Tesla feel effortless (fast USB-C cables that don't throttle, organized trunk and frunk storage, charging gear that lives in the car instead of the garage) matter more each year.

If you're in Austin and curious, the barrier to trying one is low — assuming you're 18 or older, riding for yourself, and not bringing a young kid along. Just don't expect one to show up quickly with only 45 registered in the entire state.
