Tesla Recalls 20,349 Model 3 and Model Y EVs Over Headlights That Are Too Bright

If you've ever been dazzled by an oncoming Tesla and wondered whether it was just you, there's now an official answer. Tesla has issued a recall covering 20,349 Model 3 and Model Y EVs built or serviced between 2017 and 2023, after regulators found that some cars' headlights could be more than double the permitted brightness in certain measured zones.
The recall breaks down to as many as 1,614 Model 3s from the 2017–2023 model years and 18,735 Model Ys from 2020–2023. That's a small slice of the millions of cars Tesla sold in that window, and the reason comes down to the headlight itself rather than the vehicle. According to the filing, a car is potentially affected only if it was built after June 2 of its model year, or if it had a headlight component replaced during a service visit. That narrow manufacturing window is why the affected count is so low while the model year range is so wide.
It's Not Overall Brightness — It's One Corner of the Beam
This is an important distinction for owners: the issue isn't that the headlights are too bright overall. The problem is localized to specific viewing zones — the very outer, upper edges of both headlights — where output exceeded the maximum allowable level. In some cases, Tesla says the brightness in those zones was more than double what's permitted.
The practical consequence is glare. Other road users who happen to fall within the light projected from those zones could experience reduced visibility. That's exactly the kind of scenario that makes night driving miserable for everyone else on the road, and it's why the feds pushed back so hard.
How We Got Here
The story dates back to 2024, when Tesla gave the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration a heads-up that roughly 20,000 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles were believed to have headlights exceeding the maximum allowable brightness. Tesla's position was that the defect was "inconsequential" from a safety standpoint, and it petitioned to avoid a recall on those grounds.
NHTSA disagreed. The agency publicly criticized Tesla over the ultra-bright headlights last month and denied the petition. Today's filing makes the recall official.
Tesla says it has not yet determined a fix for the affected vehicles, and that the remedy is "currently under development."
What the Fix Might Look Like
Here's the part owners actually care about, and it's still unresolved. It isn't clear whether the repair will require replacing hardware or whether Tesla can handle it with an over-the-air software update that leans on the car's adaptive beam capability. Given how much of Tesla's lighting behavior is software-controlled, an OTA remedy is plausible — but nothing has been confirmed. If your car is in the affected group, expect a notification once Tesla finalizes the remedy.
Worth noting: this is the second recent hit from federal regulators. NHTSA also opened an investigation into suspension failures after receiving 156 complaints that lateral links on certain Model 3 and Model Y vehicles could fail — a part Tesla already recalled once back in 2023.
What This Means If You Own a Model 3 or Model Y
- Check your build date. Only cars built after June 2 of their model year fall in the potentially affected window — plus any car that had a headlight component replaced during service.
- Had a headlight replaced under warranty or after a collision? That service replacement is a separate path into this recall, even if your original build date was outside the window.
- Don't try to "fix" it yourself. Tinting, taping, or aiming adjustments on a sealed LED assembly can create new problems and may complicate the official remedy later. Wait for Tesla's fix.
- Watch for the notification. Recall remedies are performed at no cost to the owner. You can also plug your VIN into the recall lookup in the Tesla app or on NHTSA's site.
Glare Cuts Both Ways
Even if your car isn't on the recall list, this story is a good reminder that headlight glare is one of the most common night-driving complaints among drivers of every brand. Being on the receiving end of an over-bright beam is a real visibility issue — and the same goes for anything that scatters light inside your own cabin.
A few practical habits help regardless of what your headlights are doing: keep your windshield genuinely clean inside and out, since interior film turns oncoming light into a starburst; make sure your own headlight lenses aren't hazed or yellowed, which scatters your beam in unintended directions; and if you frequently drive at night, keep a set of anti-glare night driving glasses or a quality visor extender in the car. None of that substitutes for the recall repair, but it makes the miles between now and then a lot easier on your eyes.
