What happened

These weren't opportunistic smash-and-grabs. According to sheriff's records, thieves used forged commercial driver's licenses, fake IDs, and social engineering to exploit loose check-in protocols between freight brokers and logistics carriers. By impersonating legitimate trucking operations, they convinced warehouse staff to hand over entire trailers right at the factory's loading docks.

The first major theft occurred last December, when a fraudulent carrier drove away with two trailers holding more than $475,000 worth of Powerwall units. Those trailers turned up empty about 500 miles away in Southern California. January was the worst single month on record for the operation, with Tesla reporting nine separate cargo thefts. In one incident, a freight broker accidentally contracted with a fake carrier, resulting in the disappearance of 123 Powerwalls that were bound for a Tesla facility in Hayward, California.
