Tesla Model 3 Gains 38 km of Range in Europe — From New Tires Alone

Usually, adding meaningful range to an EV means a new battery pack, new cell chemistry, or a redesigned motor. Tesla just found 38 kilometers in Europe by doing none of that. Instead, the entry-level Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive picked up its extra distance from a single change: a new wheel and tire package.

The official Tesla Europe account confirmed the update on X this week:

"Model 3 now comes with 572km of range (up from 534km previously), thanks to new tires."

A follow-up post clarified that the change "applies to all European LHD markets."

What Actually Changed

Tesla replaced the standard 18-inch Photon wheels on the Model 3 RWD with a new set of 18-inch Prismata wheels. The RWD sedan — which launched last fall under the "Standard" badge — now ships from the factory with efficiency-focused rubber on those wheels.

The result is a 38-kilometer gain on the European WLTP cycle, or a 7.1% jump in rated range. Notably, the wheel diameter didn't change at all. Both setups are 18 inches. The improvement comes from two things working together:

  • Redesigned wheel aerodynamics — the Prismata face manages airflow around the wheel well more cleanly than the outgoing Photon design.
  • Lower rolling-resistance tire compound — less energy lost to tire deformation at every rotation.

Same battery, same motor, same amount of stored energy — the car simply wastes less of it getting down the road.

Who Gets It (and Who Doesn't)

The upgrade applies across all European Left-Hand Drive markets, where the Prismata wheels are now the default configuration. That covers Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Estonia, Lithuania, and other mainland countries.

Right-Hand Drive markets are excluded for now. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, the online configurator still shows the older 18-inch Photon wheels alongside the previous 534-kilometer (332-mile) rating. Tesla hasn't said when — or whether — RHD markets will follow.

The Bigger Efficiency Story

This fits a pattern across Tesla's lineup. Aerodynamic and thermal refinements have been quietly paying off elsewhere, too — the Model Y L recently beat Tesla's own range estimates in real-world testing ahead of its first U.S. customer deliveries next month.

What makes the Model 3 change interesting is that Tesla didn't raise the price to deliver it. Small hardware refinements, applied to the parts that touch the road, can stretch range without touching the expensive stuff underneath.

What This Means for Your Own Car

If you already own a Model 3, this news is a useful reminder rather than an upgrade path — Tesla hasn't announced a retrofit program, and the range figure is a factory WLTP rating tied to a specific wheel and tire combination. Still, the underlying lesson applies to every EV on the road:

  • Tires matter more than most owners realize. Swapping to aggressive, wide, or high-grip rubber can cost you real range. If efficiency is your priority, look for tires rated for low rolling resistance.
  • Aero covers aren't just decoration. Many owners remove factory aero wheel covers for looks and give up efficiency in the process.
  • Tire pressure is free range. Underinflated tires increase rolling resistance immediately. A quick monthly check with a decent gauge or portable inflator is the cheapest efficiency upgrade there is.
  • Bigger wheels usually cost range. If you're configuring a new car or shopping aftermarket, the smaller wheel option is almost always the more efficient one.

Tesla just demonstrated the point at the factory level: the contact patch between your car and the pavement is one of the highest-leverage places to chase efficiency. For drivers heading into fall and winter — when range takes its seasonal hit anyway — keeping tires properly inflated and choosing efficiency-minded rubber is worth the attention.
