Tesla Model 3 and Model Y Battery Health After 93,000 Miles: What the Data Shows

If you've ever worried that your Tesla's battery is quietly falling apart, here's some reassuring news: it probably isn't. But new data does suggest Teslas age a little faster than some of their rivals, and that's worth knowing whether you're keeping your car for the long haul or shopping for a used one.
Aviloo, an Austrian battery diagnostics company, released results this week from 500,000 EV battery tests conducted worldwide since 2022. The company zeroed in on 20 popular models and published the median battery health score for each at three mileage checkpoints: 50,000 km (31,068 miles), 100,000 km (62,137 miles), and 150,000 km (93,205 miles). That score reflects how much of the vehicle's original usable capacity is still there.
The Numbers for Model 3 and Model Y
At the 150,000 km mark — call it just shy of 100,000 miles — here's how things shook out:
- Tesla Model Y: 90.32% median state of health
- Tesla Model 3: 88.94% median state of health
- Hyundai Ioniq 5: 93.79%
- Ford Mustang Mach-E: 92.53%
- Nissan Leaf (lowest in the study): 86.67%
For the Model Y, that 90.32% works out to an EPA range reduction in the neighborhood of 30 miles. The Model 3 fared a bit worse. Neither Tesla was the worst performer — that distinction went to the Nissan Leaf, Renault Zoe, and Mini Cooper SE — but both were outshone by most of the pack.
Here's the important context, though: none of the vehicles in the study did badly. Even the last-place Leaf held onto nearly 87% of its capacity after almost 100,000 miles. The old fear that EV batteries would fall off a cliff after a few years simply hasn't materialized.
Most of the Loss Happens Early
One of the more useful findings is when Teslas lose capacity. The Model 3 dropped about 6% from brand new to the first 50,000 km checkpoint. From 50,000 to 100,000 km, it lost only around 3%. From 100,000 to 150,000 km, another 3%.
The rate of loss slowed over time, which is in line with what other research on battery degradation has shown. So just because a Tesla or other EV lost 10% of its range in the first 100,000 miles, that doesn't mean it'll be down 20% after 200,000.
That front-loaded curve is actually good news for used-car shoppers. A car that's already taken its initial hit is, in a sense, past the steepest part of the decline.
The Median Doesn't Tell the Whole Story
If you're shopping used, the spread matters as much as the middle. Aviloo shared a range of results covering 99% of vehicles within each model, and the gap is wide:
- Model 3 at 150,000 km: as low as 80.28%, as high as 94.53%
- Model Y at 150,000 km: as low as 82.90%, as high as 94.94%
Real-world examples back this up. InsideEVs recently looked at a 2023 Model Y sitting at 77% state of health after roughly 110,000 miles — but that car had an exceptionally long daily commute and lived in a hot part of the U.S.
So while a roughly 10% drop is a fair benchmark around the 100,000-mile mark, it's not a guarantee. Cars that were driven hard, charged to 100% constantly, or parked somewhere hot like the American Southwest may land at the bottom of that range. A well-treated car in a temperate climate could surprise you in the other direction.
What This Means for How You Charge and Park
The study doesn't isolate causes, but the outliers it describes — hot climates, constant 100% charging, hard daily use — line up with what battery researchers have long recommended. A few practical takeaways for owners:
- Home charging beats constant DC fast charging. A Level 2 setup at home lets you top off slowly overnight instead of leaning on high-power public stalls for every charge.
- Set a daily charge limit. Most owners don't need 100% every day. Leaving the limit at a lower daily setting and only topping to full before road trips is easy to do in the car's charging menu.
- Manage heat where you can. Shade, a windshield sunshade, and parking out of direct sun in summer all reduce the thermal stress that shows up in those worst-case results.
- Carry a backup. A mobile connector and the right adapters mean you can trickle charge from a standard outlet rather than being forced into repeated fast-charge sessions on a trip.
Shopping for a Used Model 3 or Model Y?
Don't take the mileage number at face value. Two Model 3s with identical odometers can be six percentage points apart in battery health. Ask where the car lived, how it was charged, and whether the seller can show a battery health readout. If you're buying from a hot-climate state or the car has an unusually high annual mileage, factor that into what you offer.
And once it's yours, the gear you plug in matters. A solid home charging setup, quality adapters, and good charging habits are the cheapest battery insurance available — far cheaper than the alternative.
