Tesla Loses Another Top Chip Engineer to Ex-Dojo Startup DensityAI

Tesla just lost another senior name from its custom silicon group. According to Electrek, Shishuang Sun — who spent more than five years as a Tesla AI hardware architect working on Dojo and the Autopilot computers — has joined DensityAI, the AI hardware startup founded by Tesla's own former Dojo leadership. Sun now lists his role there as "Packaging and System Hardware," starting in July.
This one isn't a junior departure. Sun left Tesla as Senior Director of AI Hardware Design, one of the people responsible for turning Tesla's chip designs into hardware that actually ships and survives in a car.
Who Left, and Why It Stings
Sun's résumé basically traces the whole arc of Tesla's in-house chip ambition. Per his LinkedIn history, he first joined Tesla's Autopilot hardware group during the Jim Keller era, when Tesla was assembling the team that would design its first Full Self-Driving computer and cut its dependence on Nvidia. He left as that chapter wound down, spent just over two years at Waymo as a hardware engineering manager — running design verification, signal and power integrity, EMC, and PCB teams — then came back.
He rejoined Tesla in January 2021 as a principal engineer on AI hardware for both Dojo and Autopilot, and was promoted to Senior Director of AI Hardware Design in April 2025. His work covered:
- IC packaging
- Vertical power modules
- Signal and power integrity
- PCB design
- System thermal and mechanical engineering
That's the unglamorous half of chipmaking — and it's the half that has become the industry's real bottleneck. Getting the transistor design right is only part of the job. Getting power into the chip and heat out of it, at volume, is where high-performance AI silicon lives or dies.
DensityAI Is Basically Dojo, Reassembled
DensityAI isn't a random competitor poaching talent. When Tesla shut Dojo down in August 2025, former Dojo chief Ganesh Venkataramanan founded the startup and roughly 20 members of Tesla's supercomputer team followed him out the door. Fellow Tesla veteran Bill Chang is CTO.
The company builds chips, hardware, and software for AI data centers aimed at automotive, robotics, and industrial customers — essentially the mission Tesla walked away from when it killed Dojo and moved to Nvidia for training compute.
Tesla killed Dojo, then watched the team spin up a competitor. A year later, that competitor is still pulling people out.
The Timing Matters for Tesla's Chip Roadmap
Tesla is leaning on custom silicon harder than ever, and every one of those bets depends on exactly the packaging and thermal expertise Sun specialized in:
- AI5 taped out in April, nearly two years behind Musk's original timeline, with volume production not expected until mid-2027.
- AI6 is slated for Samsung's 2nm process, which has run into yield problems.
- Musk has floated a "Dojo 3" on top of that.
- Tesla and SpaceX are pitching the $20 billion-plus "Terafab" chip factory in Austin.
What This Means If You Own (or Are Shopping For) a Tesla
Nothing here changes how your car drives tomorrow. But it's a useful reality check on the timeline. If you've been holding off on a purchase — or holding off on outfitting the car you already have — because you're waiting for an AI5-equipped vehicle or a next-gen FSD computer retrofit, the honest read is that mid-2027 volume production is the floor, not the ceiling. Chip schedules that are already two years late don't usually get pulled forward when senior packaging leadership walks out.
Our practical take: build around the car you have now. The hardware that actually affects your daily ownership experience — how fast you charge at home, whether your adapters work at the stations on your route, how comfortable the interior is on a long drive, and what's in your trunk when something goes wrong — is all available today and doesn't depend on anyone's tape-out schedule.
A few things worth having sorted regardless of what silicon ships in 2027:
- Home charging that's dialed in. A properly rated Level 2 setup and a clean cable management solution beats waiting on any software promise.
- The right adapters for your region. With NACS and CCS both in play, a compact adapter kit in the frunk removes most road-trip anxiety.
- Roadside and safety gear. Tire repair, a portable compressor, jump/recovery gear, and a warning triangle are cheap insurance no OTA update replaces.
- Interior and storage upgrades. Model 3 Highland and Model Y Juniper owners in particular get a big quality-of-life bump from screen protection, console organizers, and all-weather mats.
Custom silicon is a people business before it's a fab business, and right now those people are moving in one direction. That's a story worth watching — just don't let it hold up the upgrades that pay off this week.
