Tesla Locks In Robovan Design With New U.S. Patent

Tesla just took a legal step to protect one of the strangest-looking vehicles it has ever shown off. Federal regulators have granted the company a design patent covering the exterior body of the Robovan, the high-capacity autonomous people-mover Tesla revealed back in 2024.

According to a breakdown shared by @tslaming on X, Tesla received U.S. Design Patent No. US D1138869 S on August 4. The company originally filed for it in October 2024, right around the time the Robovan concept made its public debut. The filing credits Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen and his team — Julien Bilodeau, Ian Kettle, and Joseph Robinson — with shaping the capsule.

A Faceless Capsule With Art Deco Roots

The patent illustrations spell out just how far the Robovan strays from a normal commercial van. The body reads more like a moving lounge or a futuristic tram, with an uninterrupted architecture that has no obvious front or back.

The design leans heavily on Art Deco streamliner trains and buses. Key details from the filing include:

  • Rounded corners and sweeping horizontal accent lines
  • Fully enclosed wheel wells, with the wheels and undercarriage tucked deep inside the lower body panels for a floating, hovercraft-like silhouette
  • A completely symmetrical, faceless profile — no grille, no hood, no side mirrors, no driver cockpit
  • A dark, continuous glass beltway wrapping the upper cabin, with curved termination points to break up the vehicle's mass
  • Near-vertical front and rear end caps that maximize usable interior space for passengers and cargo

It's the polar opposite of the Cybertruck. Where the truck is all sharp planes and flat stainless panels, the Robovan is built entirely from soft slopes and continuous curves.

What It's Designed to Carry

The patent backs up the details Tesla showed at the We, Robot event in 2024. There's no front windshield and no traditional driver controls. The shuttle is designed to carry up to 20 passengers or be reconfigured for commercial cargo, with large glass sliding doors providing access to the cabin.

Tesla has carried this gold-heavy "cyber" aesthetic across its future autonomous lineup, and leadership has hinted at autonomous RV and school bus configurations built on the same Robovan platform. The architecture could also be adapted for personal use — though whether a personal version would ever get pedals and a steering wheel is still an open question.

Where It Sits in Tesla's Roadmap

Realistically, the Robovan is not next in line. Work on the larger vehicle has taken a backseat while Tesla focuses on the Cybercab, which entered mass production in April. But locking down patent rights is a signal that the retro-futuristic transit vision hasn't been shelved — it's just waiting its turn.
