Tesla FSD Can Now Grab the Wheel While You're Driving Manually

Tesla is rolling out a version of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) that can take control of your car to avoid a crash even when you're driving manually. The automaker announced the change on September 4 as part of FSD Supervised v14.3.9, in a post from its AI team.

Until now, FSD only did anything when you turned it on. With this release, a slice of the same v14 software stack Tesla has been shipping since April sits quietly in the background while you drive, ready to step in.

What the new feature actually does

Tesla says v14.3.9 was "starting to roll out shortly" and includes what it describes as "a new active safety feature set." The key line from Tesla's AI team:

FSD Supervised can now activate on your behalf when an imminent collision is detected and Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) may not be enough.

That's the important distinction. Standard AEB brakes — that's all it does. This new system lets FSD take directional control and steer around an obstacle when braking alone won't cut it.

Tesla added that the system "may also engage if we detect you're heavily distracted or have accidentally disengaged FSD." So there are two triggers:

  • An imminent collision that braking can't solve on its own
  • Moments when the driver appears checked out, or FSD was switched off by accident

The open questions

Tesla hasn't said whether the feature can be turned off, or how the car decides that steering is safer than braking. Those are meaningful gaps. Electrek has documented v14 swerving toward a ditch for no reason, and Tesla's long-running phantom braking problem in Autopilot is well known to owners.

As Electrek's Fred Lambert puts it: a false positive that brakes is jarring. A false positive that steers is a different level of risk. Automatic collision avoidance is a good idea in principle — AEB has prevented countless crashes, and several automakers have been building evasive-maneuver systems for years. The concern is the false-positive rate. Get that wrong during manual driving and the feature could cause the exact crashes it's meant to prevent.

What this means for you as an owner

If you drive a Tesla, this is worth knowing about before it lands on your car rather than after. A few practical takeaways:

  • Check your release notes. When v14.3.9 arrives, read what's new and look through Autopilot settings to see whether the active safety feature is adjustable or can be disabled.
  • Expect the wheel to move. If the system engages while you're driving manually, the steering input won't come from you. Knowing that in advance beats being surprised by it at highway speed.
  • Keep your hands in a proper position. A relaxed one-finger grip is a bad idea in a car that may apply its own steering torque. Nine-and-three, both hands, is the right habit either way.
  • Driver monitoring matters more now. Tesla says the system may engage when it detects you're "heavily distracted." Keeping your phone mounted and your eyes on the road reduces the odds of the car deciding you've checked out.

The accessory angle

Software that watches for distraction is a nudge toward setting up your cabin so you're not distracted in the first place. A solid phone mount that keeps navigation in your line of sight, a wireless charger that means no fumbling with cables mid-drive, and a clean center console setup all do more for real-world safety than any single software release.

It's also a fair moment to check your roadside kit. Whatever the car's software does or doesn't do, a first aid kit, a reflective triangle or LED flare set, a tire inflator, and a jump pack are the things you actually want in the frunk when something goes wrong. Active safety systems reduce the odds of a collision; they don't help you after one.

Bottom line

Letting the car steer around something it can't brake for is a logical next step, and Tesla isn't the first automaker to try it. But this is the same v14 stack that's been caught swerving without cause, and it's now cleared to act while you're the one driving. The single biggest thing owners will want from Tesla is a clear answer on whether this can be switched off — and so far, that answer hasn't come.
