The Tesla Cybercab has no steering wheel, no turn stalks, and no pedals — it was designed from the ground up to drive itself. So what happens when a technician needs to nudge one onto a flatbed or line it up with a repair lift? Thanks to an Austin rider who caught a screen he probably wasn't meant to see, we now have a clear answer: an on-screen joystick.
A Rider Stumbles Into a Developer Menu
X user @MatthewSkrzypc1 hopped into a Cybercab for what should have been a routine Robotaxi trip in Austin and found the display running in an entirely different configuration — a diagnostic interface built for Tesla personnel, not passengers.
"When I got in the vehicle, the display was in a different configuration with a virtual joystick for manual driving! I have a feeling I wasn't supposed to see this… but I try to manually drive the vehicle anyway!"
He was right — he wasn't supposed to see it. This isn't a hidden feature riders can unlock. It's a service-and-validation tool that slipped through, most likely because the software failed to switch back to passenger mode before the ride started.
What's Actually on the Screen
The layout looks nothing like the consumer entertainment UI. It reads as a purpose-built debugging screen, and this video gives the clearest look at it yet:
- Virtual joystick (left side of the display): tap and hold, then slide up or down for forward and reverse throttle, or left and right to steer.
- Brake button: a dedicated manual brake control.
- Horn button: for the same reasons every other car has one.
- Door controls: a button to close the cabin doors.
Whether there's a speed cap on manual driving through this interface isn't clear. What is clear is that the safety layer worked: the on-screen controls tracked the passenger's touch inputs, but the car never moved. Tesla's backend appears to block unauthorized riders from engaging the drive motors, even with the menu visible.
Why a Joystick Exists at All
Steering a car by reaching toward the center of the dash is genuinely impractical — but the Cybercab was never meant to be driven by a person. The two-seater was engineered around Level 4 autonomy, which Tesla demonstrated publicly for the first time at last week's Austin launch event.
Real-world fleet operations still need a fallback, though. Depot crews and service staff have to reposition vehicles around lifts, make small parking corrections, and roll cars onto tow trucks when cameras are obstructed. Touchscreen controls cover those edge cases without adding a wheel, stalks, and pedals that 99.9% of the vehicle's life would never use.
This also isn't the first sighting. Back on August 30, a validation tester was spotted using these same controls to park a driverless, wheel-less Cybercab at an Austin Supercharger — but that clip was from outside the car. This new video is the first good look at the actual interface.
What It Means for Riders
Practically speaking: nothing changes for your ride. You can't drive a Cybercab, and the one person who tried confirmed as much on camera. Now that Cybercabs are carrying public Robotaxi passengers across Austin, expect a software patch to lock these developer menus away so riders stop tripping over them.
It's a small glitch, but a useful window into how a wheel-free fleet actually gets maintained day to day — and a reminder that even a car built with zero driving hardware still needs a human-operable Plan B somewhere in the stack.
