Tesla Confirms FSD v14 Lite Is in Development for Australia & New Zealand

Hardware 3 owners in Australia and New Zealand finally have something official to hold onto. Tesla has confirmed that localized development of FSD (Supervised) v14 Lite is actively underway for right-hand-drive markets across Oceania — the first real update HW3 drivers in the region have received in months.
The confirmation came through direct email updates sent to regional owners, one of whom shared the message on X. In the note from Tesla Motors Australia, the company laid out where things stand:
"We're currently rolling out FSD (Supervised) v14 Lite to users in North America and South Korea, with active development underway for Australia and New Zealand. This represents meaningful progress toward bringing the FSD (Supervised) feature to Hardware 3 vehicles; something we remain committed and dedicated to delivering."
Why Hardware 3 Needs a "Lite" Build at All
FSD v14 Lite is a distilled, compressed version of the main end-to-end neural network that runs on newer Hardware 4 (HW4/AI4) vehicles. The reason it exists comes down to raw silicon: HW3 computers have only about 15% of the memory bandwidth available on current AI4 hardware, which makes running the full uncompressed model a non-starter.
Tesla has already confirmed that HW3 cars won't support unsupervised autonomy, and they won't get the upcoming FSD v15 update either. That makes v14 Lite the end of the line for these vehicles — a bridge to hold owners over until promised hardware upgrades arrive, such as the AI4+ (or AI4.5) FSD computer Tesla announced earlier this year. Some owners have gotten tired of waiting entirely; one HW3 owner and tinkerer recently completed a DIY upgrade to HW4 just to prove it could be done.
The Road to This Announcement
Development has moved quickly over the summer:
- FSD v14 Lite originally debuted in June, then went quiet after reaching select early access testers
- Tesla pushed an unexpected v14 Lite update in July, which kicked off a wider rollout
- That opened the door to a public North American rollout, plus an international launch in South Korea
- Australia and New Zealand are now confirmed as the next markets in active development
Right-Hand Drive Roads Take Extra Work
Taking additional time here makes sense. Engineers have to adapt the navigation models for left-hand traffic, unique local road markings, and multi-lane roundabouts — none of which the North American build was trained around.
Thermal behavior is the other piece of the puzzle. Early fleet reports indicate some HW3 FSD computers are running hot on v14 Lite because of the heavy processing load the compressed neural network demands. Validating operating efficiency alongside driving safety before shipping code into the Southern Hemisphere helps prevent processor throttling during hot summer drives.
What Owners Can Do in the Meantime
There's no dated timeline yet — Tesla says localized builds will land once safety benchmarks clear. European HW3 owners, for their part, are still waiting on any official word at all.
If you're an HW3 owner in Australia or New Zealand watching the software queue, the heat angle is worth paying attention to on your side of the car, too. A cabin that bakes in the sun puts more load on everything, so sunshades for the glass roof and windshield, a well-fitted screen protector to cut glare on the center display, and a proper vent-mount or dash setup for your phone all make long summer drives easier on you and your interior. And since v14 Lite is a bridge to a hardware upgrade rather than a destination, it's a reasonable moment to invest in the accessories that carry over to your next Tesla — charging adapters, a quality Level 2 cable, and roadside safety gear — rather than anything tied to a specific software build.
