Range Rover's Next EV Breaks Cover — And It's Not an SUV

Range Rover has built its entire identity on tall, boxy, go-anywhere luxury. So the brand's fifth model is a genuine surprise: the new Range Rover GT is a low-slung grand tourer with a fastback roofline, and fresh spy images show it out testing in the wild.

The GT was revealed last month, but photographer @Wilcoblok caught a prototype on the road near the Nürburgring — still wrapped in heavy camouflage, yet clearly showing a sleeker, sportier shape than anything else wearing the Range Rover badge.

A Range Rover That Isn't an SUV

Range Rover calls the GT "a captivating new expression" of the brand and "the most technologically sophisticated" model it has ever created. According to Martin Limbert, the brand's managing director, the design came out of years of obsessing over the fundamentals of the GT formula.

It's also a technical first: the GT will be the debut vehicle on JLR's new EMA platform. It launches as a battery-electric vehicle, with a full-hybrid option planned later in the model's lifecycle.

For context, the flagship Range Rover Electric SUV — which arrives first — rides on JLR's MLA platform with a larger 118 kWh pack and up to 373 miles (600 km) of range. The GT's smaller battery is expected to travel farther thanks to the aerodynamic advantage of that fastback body. That's the same physics lesson EV owners learn the hard way every winter: shape and drag matter as much as kilowatt-hours.

Inside: Calm, Not Cluttered

The cabin follows what Limbert describes as "purity, precision, and quiet modernity." A large digital screen anchors the center of the dash, while a small driver display replaces the traditional instrument cluster. A concealed air vent runs the full width of the cabin, and a woven textile wraps the dashboard to hide the speakers.

It's a minimalist approach that will feel familiar to anyone who has stepped into a modern Tesla — one big screen, few physical controls, and a lot of hidden hardware. Range Rover says more details are coming later this year.

What It Means for EV Drivers

The GT is a reminder that the "electric grand tourer" category is filling out fast, and it's aimed squarely at people who actually drive long distances. A 300-mile-plus EPA rating is real road-trip territory — but as any experienced EV owner will tell you, range is only half the equation. The other half is being ready when you get there.

That means a charging kit that doesn't depend on the station cooperating: a quality Level 2 portable charger for hotels and rentals, the right adapter for whatever plug standard you roll up to, and a cable organizer so none of it ends up loose in a very expensive trunk. Long-haul EVs also make the case for the boring-but-essential gear — a tire inflator, a portable jump pack, and a roadside safety kit — because a fastback GT is exactly the kind of car you'll take somewhere remote and scenic.

Minimalist interiors like the GT's raise the same practical questions we hear about Model 3 Highland and Model Y Juniper cabins: where do you put your phone, how do you mount a dash cam without ruining the look, and how do you keep a screen-first interior from turning into a fingerprint museum. Clean-mount accessories and no-drill solutions exist for a reason.

Production doesn't start until 2027, so there's plenty of time before the Range Rover GT shows up in American driveways. For now, it's a good sign for the segment: the fastest way to more range isn't always a bigger battery — sometimes it's just a better shape.
