No Home Charging for the Cybercab: Tesla's Robotaxi Is DC-Only

If you were already picturing a Cybercab in your garage, tethered to a Wall Connector overnight, we have some news: it won't work. Tesla's two-seat autonomous vehicle doesn't support AC charging at all — not from a wall box, not from a standard outlet with a Mobile Connector. It's DC fast charging or nothing.
Kyle Conner (@itskyleconner) of Out of Spec Reviews confirmed the Cybercab's charging setup on X after hands-on time with the vehicle in Austin:
"It does not support AC charging. Perhaps if they ever sell a consumer version it would be needed but for fleet only, there's no OBC - which is kind of cool for cost / durability optimization."
The key detail is that missing OBC — the onboard charger. That's the hardware inside an EV that converts alternating current from your home or a Level 2 station into the direct current your battery actually stores. No onboard charger means a Level 2 plug simply has nothing to talk to. The Cybercab accepts DC fast charging only, through a hidden NACS port.
Why Tesla Left the Onboard Charger Out
For a commercial ride-hailing vehicle, the math is different than it is for your Model 3 or Model Y. An onboard charger adds weight, manufacturing complexity, thermal management requirements, and cost — all for a capability a robotaxi would rarely use. A car built to stay in near-constant motion isn't going to sit for hours sipping 11.5 kW from a home charger. It needs to top up fast and get back out on the road.
So Tesla is building the infrastructure around that reality instead. The company is already constructing large charging and maintenance hubs designed specifically to service driverless fleets, with fast turnaround as the whole point.
What This Means If Tesla Ever Sells One to You
Right now the Cybercab is strictly a commercial platform. But the DC-only architecture raises real questions about how private ownership would work, and there are a few paths forward:
- Fleet depots opened to private owners. If individuals eventually buy Cybercabs to deploy on the autonomous network, Tesla could open its automated depots to them — bundling rapid charging, automated cleaning, and routine maintenance into the ride-hail commission.
- Wireless charging at home. Tesla is developing an inductive charging system for the Robotaxi fleet, engineered for high-efficiency power transfer. A home pad could handle the AC-to-DC conversion inside the ground unit rather than inside the car — solving the problem without adding an OBC back to the vehicle.
- Public DC fast charging. Superchargers and other DC networks would work today, since the NACS port is already there.
At this week's official Cybercab launch event in Austin, Tesla avoided any discussion of consumer purchase timelines, retail pricing, or home equipment. Elon Musk has previously teased that individual purchases could arrive before the end of the year, but without hardware revisions or some form of external DC home charging, the Cybercab is built to run on commercial DC power — full stop.
The Takeaway for Your Current EV
None of this changes anything about the Tesla in your driveway right now. Every consumer Tesla — Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck — has an onboard charger and charges happily on AC. Your Wall Connector, your Mobile Connector, your J1772 and NACS adapters, and your Level 2 setup all remain exactly as useful as they were yesterday.
The Cybercab is the outlier here, not the start of a trend. It's a purpose-built commercial machine that traded a convenience feature most owners rely on for cost and durability gains that only make sense at fleet scale. If anything, it's a good reminder of how much quiet work that onboard charger does every night while your car sits in the garage.
