One quirk worth flagging if you're shopping: the EPA rates the single-motor, rear-wheel drive CLA at 374 miles, well above the 4Matic's 312. Moloughney tested the all-wheel drive model — the one with the lower rating — and still beat it by 73 miles. The 350 4Matic starts at $51,950, which makes the luxury-plus-range combination look like genuine value.
The lesson for any EV owner: EPA numbers are a standardized yardstick, not a promise. Your real-world range depends on speed, temperature, tire pressure, and how your car is set up — and those last two are squarely in your control.
What This Means for Your Own EV
You can't retrofit a two-speed gearbox into your Model Y. But the CLA's result is a useful reminder that highway efficiency is mostly a game of small, controllable factors — and a few of them live in your trunk or your garage.

- Precondition before you plug in. Efficient cars still charge best with a warm battery. Using your car's navigation to route to a fast charger typically triggers battery preconditioning automatically — a free habit that shortens stops.
- Keep basic roadside gear aboard. Longer range means longer, more remote stretches between stops. A compact emergency kit, a tire repair kit, and a reflective warning triangle belong in every EV, regardless of how good the range test was.
