Jeep and Ram's Extended-Range EVs Slip Again — What It Means for EV Buyers

If you've been holding out for a big American electric truck or SUV that doesn't ask you to plan your life around charging stops, you're going to be waiting a while longer. According to an Automotive News report cited by Electrek, Stellantis has delayed both the Ram 1500 REV and the extended-range Jeep Grand Wagoneer — again.
What Actually Changed
The Ram 1500 REV extended-range pickup was set to arrive by the end of 2026. That's no longer happening. The new target is around April 2027.
The Jeep side of the house slipped further. The extended-range Grand Wagoneer was originally scheduled to enter production earlier this year, but it now faces a roughly six-month delay and won't roll off the line until November 2027.
For context, this isn't Stellantis's first schedule change here. The fully electric Ram 1500 REV was delayed several times before the company officially declared it dead last year. CEO Antonio Filosa then pointed to "a much more comprehensive product range" for Ram, headlined by its first extended-range EV — the model originally known as the Ramcharger.
A Quick Refresher on EREVs
An extended-range electric vehicle is not a traditional hybrid, and it's not a full battery EV either. The wheels are driven electrically, but there's still a gas engine on board whose only job is to spin a generator and feed the battery when the charge runs low.
The Grand Wagoneer's setup is a good illustration:
- 92 kWh battery pack
- 3.6-liter V6 engine driving a 130 kW generator
- A combined 500 miles of range on a full charge plus a full tank, per Stellantis
- An estimated 647 horsepower and 620 lb-ft of torque
- 0 to 60 mph in about five seconds

Jeep has also said the 2026 Grand Wagoneer would be the first extended-range electric vehicle sold in the US when it goes on sale next year — a claim that gets harder to defend with every schedule change.
Stellantis Isn't the Only One Chasing This
The delay matters more because the category is filling up fast. Hyundai, Genesis, Ford, and Volkswagen's Scout brand are all planning extended-range EVs over the next few years. Hyundai is launching the Santa Fe EREV in the first half of 2027, built in Alabama and sold in the US.
Do the math on the dates and the picture is unflattering: Hyundai's EREV could reach buyers before the Ram and roughly half a year before the Wagoneer. Every push to the right leaves Jeep and Ram further behind the pack in a segment they were supposed to define.
What This Means If You're Shopping
A late-2027 production start means real customer deliveries land even later. If your current vehicle is on its last legs, an EREV from Stellantis probably shouldn't be your plan A.
It's also worth being honest about what an EREV solves. The gas generator is insurance for long trips and towing — it is not a substitute for home charging. Owners still plug in for the vast majority of their daily miles, which means the same fundamentals apply as with any EV: a solid Level 2 setup at home, the right adapter for whatever public network you lean on, and a portable charger in the trunk for the places that don't have one.
If you're currently driving a Tesla or another full EV and you've been eyeing an EREV truck as your next vehicle, this delay buys you time rather than costing you anything. Two extra years is plenty of runway for the charging network — and the accessory ecosystem around it — to keep improving.
The Bottom Line
Ram's extended-range pickup is now targeting roughly April 2027, and the extended-range Grand Wagoneer won't start production until November 2027. The hardware still sounds compelling on paper — 500 miles of combined range and 647 horsepower is a genuinely appealing package for a full-size SUV. But paper specs don't tow anything, and competitors are moving while Stellantis rewrites the calendar.
