Hyundai's IONIQ 9 Calligraphy Black Ink Lands in the UK and Europe as the New Flagship

Hyundai just gave its three-row electric SUV a new top rung. The IONIQ 9 Calligraphy Black Ink, first shown in April at the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Savannah, Georgia, is now launching in the UK and Europe as the range-topping trim, slotting in above the existing Calligraphy.

The pitch is straightforward: take the most powerful IONIQ 9 and dress it in black, inside and out. Hyundai says the Black Ink treatment draws its philosophy from Calligraphy itself, a craft that is meticulous and takes years to master.

What Makes Black Ink Different

The changes are cosmetic rather than mechanical, but they are the kind of details that owners notice every time they walk up to the car.

Underneath, nothing changes from the regular Calligraphy. Black Ink uses the same dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup and 110-kWh battery, good for a combined 422 horsepower and up to 372 miles (600 km) of WLTP range. Buyers can pick six- or seven-seat configurations, so this is still very much a family hauler, just one wearing a tuxedo.

What It Costs

In the UK, the Calligraphy Black Ink starts at £79,320 (about $107,000). Hyundai's German site lists it from €89,950 (about $104,000). US pricing has not been announced, but with the current range-topping Calligraphy Design starting at $76,490, the 2027 IONIQ 9 Performance Calligraphy Black Ink is expected to land somewhere around $85,000.

As always, the arrival of a new range-topper tends to shake loose better deals on outgoing stock, so shoppers who do not need the blacked-out badge may find the current IONIQ 9 lineup more compelling on price.

What This Means If You're Kitting Out a Three-Row EV

A seven-seat electric SUV with a 110-kWh battery has a different accessory profile than a compact commuter, and Black Ink's all-dark cabin adds a wrinkle or two worth planning for.

• Home charging comes first. A 110-kWh pack is a lot of energy to put back overnight. A properly specced Level 2 wall charger, rather than a trickle cable, is what makes a battery this size livable day to day.
• Carry the right adapters. Road-tripping a three-row EV means using whatever DC fast charging is available on the route, so keeping the correct adapter in the trunk is cheap insurance against a detour.
• Protect that Nappa leather. Black Nappa looks stunning and shows every crumb, scuff, and sunscreen smudge, especially in the second and third rows. Seat covers, all-weather floor liners, and a proper interior care kit earn their keep fast in a family car.
• Think about third-row logistics. Seat-back organizers, rear USB-C hubs, and trunk cargo trays matter more when you are regularly loading six or seven people plus their gear.
• Keep roadside gear onboard. A tire inflator, a compact first aid kit, and a warning triangle belong in any family vehicle, and they take up almost no space in an SUV this size.

The IONIQ 9 Calligraphy Black Ink is not a new EV so much as a sharper-dressed version of a good one. If the blacked-out look is what finally sells you on a three-row electric SUV, the fundamentals underneath are unchanged, and that is arguably the best thing you can say about a flagship trim.
