Even More Questions Swirl Around Tesla's Cybercab Rollout

Tesla pulled the covers off its Cybercab robotaxi in Austin, Texas on September 3, and the two-seat, steering-wheel-less pod arrived with plenty of media buzz behind it. As CleanTechnica's Tina Casey reports, though, most of that buzz happened before the event. The unveiling itself mostly produced head-scratching — and a growing pile of questions about who actually buys one of these, how it charges, and what happens when something goes wrong on the road.
None of this is a knock on Tesla ownership as it exists today. But a few of the Cybercab details are worth understanding, because one of them cuts straight to how the rest of us live with our EVs.
The Charging Detail That Should Stop You Cold
Here's the line from the report that jumps out at anyone who plugs in at home every night: the Cybercab is not compatible with Level 2 home charging, let alone Level 1. It's a DC fast charging vehicle, full stop.
That single spec quietly kills a lot of scenarios. Owner-operated Cybercabs are off the table unless you happen to have DC fast charging on site, which rules out the gig-economy angle almost entirely. It also removes the Cybercab from consideration for the many commercial fleets built around drivers charging at home overnight.
It's a useful reminder of why Level 2 charging remains the backbone of normal EV ownership. For a Model 3, Model Y, Highland, Juniper, Model S, Model X, or Cybertruck, a proper 240V home setup — a Wall Connector or a quality portable Level 2 unit with the right NEMA adapter — is what turns an EV from a logistics project into an appliance you never think about. Cheap overnight electricity, a full battery every morning, and no reliance on whether the public network is having a good day. The Cybercab, by design, gives all of that up.
Who's Actually Buying These?
Tesla is openly shopping the Cybercab to outside operators. A contact form on the company's website is headlined "Help Us Build Our Robotaxi Network," with four options: Cybercab fleet vehicle purchasing, mobility hubs and infrastructure, event collaboration, and other.
Which raises the obvious question industry watchers keep asking: if the Cybercab is such a reliable money-maker, why is Tesla selling them to anyone else instead of keeping the fleet in-house?
History gives fleet buyers reason to hesitate. Hertz famously pledged to buy 100,000 Teslas in October 2021 and fell far short, hit by unprepared charging infrastructure and then by Tesla price cuts of up to 30% that gutted the residual value of the cars already in its fleet. In December 2025, Fleets Europe reported that Dutch leasing startup MisterGreen — which leased Teslas exclusively — sold off its assets after significant losses that it largely blamed on write-downs on its Tesla fleet, following Tesla's 2024 fleet discounts.
The First Responder Problem
On September 5, NBC News reporter David Ingram flagged Tesla's emergency guidance for the Cybercab. His summary: the guidance tells first responders the robotaxi "can be quickly pushed" to clear a lane, but warns that doing it incorrectly risks electric shock and overheating the motor.
The full document is more sobering. Tesla notes that after a safety-critical event, low voltage power may not be available and the touchscreen may not work, and that trying to restore low voltage power on a crashed vehicle could cause an electrical fire — so don't reconnect it. Then there's this, in all caps:
"LACK OF MOVEMENT OR VISUAL INDICATION OF AUTONOMOUS MODE DOES NOT MEAN AUTONOMOUS MODE IS OFF. UNTIL THE VEHICLE IS FULLY SHUT OFF AND A TESLA REPRESENTATIVE GIVES THE ALL CLEAR, APPROACH CAUTIOUSLY."
Tesla also advises waiting for a representative to confirm Autonomous Mode is disabled before any significant interaction with the vehicle. But the guide hedges on whether that help will arrive: on page 13, it tells responders that if they cannot reach Tesla Robotaxi First Responder Support, they should cage the vehicle first before interacting with it directly. Meanwhile, NHTSA opened an Audit Query on September 4 regarding the Austin event.
What This Means If You Drive a Tesla Today
Cybercabs are meant to share the road with the rest of us, and a driverless two-seater that responders are told to approach cautiously is a new variable at crash scenes and on shoulders. A few practical takeaways:
- Home charging is the whole game. If you're still running on a 120V outlet, a Level 2 setup is the single upgrade that changes your ownership experience most. The Cybercab's DC-only design is the exception, not a preview of where consumer EVs are headed.
- Carry your own roadside kit. The Cybercab story is fundamentally about not being able to reach support when you need it. A charged flashlight, reflective triangles or LED flares, a hi-vis vest, and a tire inflator/repair kit keep you in control of your own bad night.
- Don't touch an unattended robotaxi. If you come across a stopped Cybercab, leave it alone and call it in. Tesla's own guidance says stillness doesn't mean the vehicle is off.
- Keep a mobile connector and adapters aboard. Public charging gaps were a real factor in the Hertz unwind. Flexibility at the plug is still worth having.
The Cybercab may eventually work exactly as advertised. For now, the questions are stacking up faster than the answers — and the most instructive one for everyday drivers is the simplest: a car that can't charge in your garage isn't really a car you own.
