Cybertruck Powershare Can Finally Run Your House Alongside a Powerwall 3

Tesla announced on Thursday that Cybertruck Powershare can now back up a home at the same time as a Powerwall 3. Run together, Electrek reports, the truck and the home battery add more than three days of backup power — what Tesla describes as the equivalent of nine extra Powerwalls. It's a feature Tesla originally promised for 2025, and it closes the single most annoying gap in Powershare.
What actually changed
Until this week, Powershare could back up your house — but not if that house already had a Powerwall. You had to pick one or the other. Which meant the truck was useless as a backup source for exactly the people most likely to want it: owners who had already bought into Tesla's home energy hardware.
Now the two run as one system. The Powerwall 3 keeps powering the house the way it always has, and the Cybertruck's 123 kWh pack extends the runtime once the wall battery starts running low. Tesla's "nine additional Powerwalls" math holds up, too: a single Powerwall stores 13.5 kWh, and nine of those lands right about at the size of the truck's battery.

The hardware you need — and what it costs
This is the part worth reading before you get excited. Powershare pushes up to 11.5 kW into the home, and it requires two specific pieces of Tesla hardware:
- A Universal Wall Connector. The charger doubles as the export path — power flows back out through the same connector you plug in with every night.
- A Powershare Gateway. This is the box that safely isolates your house from the grid during an outage.
- A Powerwall 3 if you want the combined setup described above.
That hardware runs around $4,000 installed, based on pricing when Powershare first launched. Install quotes vary wildly, though — Electrek notes some owners were quoted far more, including one who was told over $30,000. If you're considering this, get multiple quotes before you commit to anything.
Why it took so long
Tesla launched Powershare with the Cybertruck in late 2023. In October 2024, it told owners that Powerwall integration was coming "sometime in 2025." That date passed. In December 2025, Tesla moved the timeline to mid-2026, acknowledging it was close to a full year later than promised. As recently as late August, Cybertruck lead engineer Wes Morrill still had no date to offer, telling owners only that he'd share an update "when there is something new."
Morrill has consistently pointed at the engineering, not the schedule. Getting two grid-forming devices — the truck and the Powerwall — to coordinate power safely without a network connection, across different hardware generations, plus clearing grid-safety certifications, took longer than anyone at Tesla expected.
The context here is that Tesla has spent 2026 turning the Cybertruck's battery into a genuine grid asset. It launched a Cybertruck vehicle-to-grid program in Texas in February, and in April made the truck the first AC vehicle-to-grid asset in California through PG&E. Home backup alongside a Powerwall was the last consumer-facing piece missing.
What this means for EV owners
The broader takeaway: your home charging hardware is no longer just about filling the battery. It's increasingly the doorway for power flowing back out, too — and that changes how you should think about your garage setup.
A few honest notes. Powershare is Tesla-hardware-specific: it needs Tesla's own Universal Wall Connector to export. A third-party Level 2 charger will charge your Cybertruck perfectly well, but it will not send power back to the house.
