China Now Has More Solar Than Coal — What It Means for EV Drivers

Here's a number worth pausing on if you drive electric: China, the largest electricity market on the planet, now has more installed solar generation capacity than coal. According to Chinese state-run media reporting picked up by Electrek this week, the country sits at 1,288 gigawatts of solar against 1,285 GW of coal — a razor-thin margin, but a first.
Solar now accounts for 31.5% of China's total installed generation capacity, which makes it the single largest category in the mix. Coal has dropped to second place. For a country that's also the world's largest auto market and is electrifying that market fast, the timing is hard to ignore.
Capacity Is Not the Same as Electricity Used
Before anyone declares coal finished, there's an important distinction buried in this story — and it's the same one that trips people up when they shop for home solar.
Installed capacity is the nameplate rating: the maximum a plant could produce under ideal conditions. Actual output is a fraction of that, and the fraction varies enormously by generation type. Solar farms typically land somewhere around a 25% capacity factor, because the sun isn't always shining. Coal plants often run closer to 50%. So even with more solar panels bolted down than coal boilers spinning, China is still burning more coal for electricity than it's harvesting from the sun.
That gap is closing, though. In the first half of 2026, wind and solar combined supplied 24.6% of Chinese electricity generation, while coal supplied 49.7%. That's the first time coal has fallen below half of the country's generation.
The takeaway for EV owners: the grid your car plugs into is a moving target, and in most of the world it's moving in one direction. The car you buy today gets cleaner every year you own it.
Why the Solar Buildout Kept Going
Solar installations in China actually slowed this year compared to last, after the country eliminated feed-in tariffs that had guaranteed prices to solar generators. Those producers now have to compete on the open market. Installations continued anyway, for a simple reason: solar is cheaper to build than most other forms of generation. When the economics work without a subsidy, the buildout doesn't stop — it just gets more disciplined.
The picture isn't uniformly rosy. Long-term coal plant contracts keep older, dirtier generation running and can force curtailment of renewable output even when the sun and wind are available. China also continues to build new coal plants. Grid-connected batteries, whether chemical or thermal, are the obvious fix for that mismatch — store the midday solar, release it after dark, and the coal plants have less excuse to run.
The EV Connection
The reason this matters beyond energy-nerd circles: China's pure EV sales are climbing while sales of anything with an engine are falling. Fueling that fleet from an increasingly renewable grid compounds the benefit. And it's already showing up in the aggregate numbers — even though total coal use ticked back up this year on higher electricity demand and expensive fossil gas, the drop in oil consumption from electric cars more than offset it. China's total emissions were down 1% in Q2.
Oil prices, meanwhile, are spiking globally. That's the volatility EV drivers largely stepped away from when they switched to charging at home.
What This Looks Like in Your Driveway
You can't install 1,288 GW of solar. But the logic that's playing out at national scale is the same logic that makes home charging so appealing:
- Charge on your own schedule, not the pump's. A Level 2 home setup means you fill up overnight at your utility's cheapest rate instead of paying whatever the market says that week.
- Time-of-use scheduling is free money. Most modern EVs — including Tesla's Model 3, Model Y, and the Highland and Juniper refreshes — let you set a departure time and charging window in-car. Set it once and you're done.
- Rooftop solar plus an EV is the tightest pairing in home energy. If you have panels, daytime charging turns surplus generation into miles instead of a small credit on a bill.
- Adapters keep your options open. Public charging standards are still consolidating. A good CCS or J1772 adapter in the frunk means a slow week for your home setup never becomes a stranded weekend.
- Storage is the missing piece — at every scale. Batteries are what let China's grid stop curtailing solar, and they're what lets a home system charge a car after sunset.
The Bottom Line
A three-gigawatt lead on paper isn't a victory lap, and China remains the world's largest annual CO2 emitter — though the United States holds the title for the most cumulative contribution to climate change by a wide margin. What the milestone does signal is direction. The largest electricity market in the world crossed a threshold, coal fell below half of generation for the first time, and EV adoption is doing measurable work on the emissions side of the ledger.
