Can Tesla FSD Handle America's Steepest Dirt Road On Its Own?

Most of us use Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) on highways, in traffic, or on the boring commute stretch where lane lines are crisp and predictable. But what happens when the pavement — and the paint — disappears entirely?
The Fast Lane EV YouTube channel decided to find out. They took a Tesla Model 3 equipped with FSD (Supervised) up what's considered the steepest dirt road in the United States, and the result was more impressive than you might expect.
The Road: Colorado's Lick Skillet
Lick Skillet Road in Colorado is about a mile of unpaved climbing with an average grade of 14.2% and a peak grade of 18%. It's littered with rocks and construction debris, packed with blind corners, and — importantly for a camera-based driver-assistance system — completely devoid of lane lines.
It's also not empty. Cars, trucks, and cyclists all share that mile of dirt, which means the Tesla had to handle real traffic in an environment with essentially none of the visual cues FSD normally leans on.
How The Model 3 Did
Better than expected, honestly. According to InsideEVs' write-up of the test, the Model 3 seemed to understand the width of the road and kept itself on the correct side for the entire climb. The TFLEV crew deliberately kept their recovery vehicle — a Toyota Land Cruiser — behind the Tesla so it had nothing to follow, and the car still figured out where it belonged.
Even when oncoming vehicles came around blind corners, the Tesla stayed on the right side of the road and never got into trouble.
Fair caveat: the road does have fairly clear shoulders, a few guardrails, and trees flanking much of the route, so the cameras weren't working from nothing. But there were no painted lines and no road signs to reference.
Where It Needed A Human
Two moments stood out, and both are useful reminders of why the word "Supervised" is in the name.
- The cyclist standoff. The Model 3 came up behind a pair of cyclists and simply followed them at a safe distance. It never did anything wrong — but it also never passed, which gets awkward fast for the riders being trailed by a silent car. In fairness, most of the corners were blind, so there may genuinely not have been a safe opening. The crew took over manually to make the pass.
- A late pedestrian detection. Before that manual takeover, the system failed to recognize a pedestrian walking near the cyclists until the last second. The car wasn't in a position to hit them, but had it been, human intervention would have been required.

What This Means If You Actually Drive Off The Pavement
The takeaway isn't "let FSD drive your Tesla up a mountain." It's that the system is more robust in low-information environments than a lot of owners assume — which is genuinely reassuring if your favorite trailhead, campsite, or cabin sits at the end of a couple miles of gravel.
But the test also underlines something practical: steep, rocky, debris-strewn roads are hard on a vehicle regardless of who's steering. If dirt-road driving is part of your routine, a few things are worth having sorted before you go:
- Clean cameras. Every bit of FSD's competence on that road came from cameras reading shoulders, guardrails, and tree lines. Dust from a mile of dirt road is exactly what degrades that. A microfiber kit in the frunk and a quick wipe of the pillar and repeater cameras before you rely on any assist feature is a two-minute habit worth building.
- Tire pressure and a way to check it. Grade and loose surfaces punish underinflated tires, and Colorado-style elevation swings move your pressures around. A portable inflator with a digital gauge earns its space.
- Roadside and recovery basics. TFLEV brought a Land Cruiser as a chase vehicle. You probably won't — so a tow strap, a compact recovery kit, and a jump/emergency power pack are the sane substitute. Blind corners and 18% grades are not where you want to discover you have nothing.
- Off-grid charging math. Sustained steep climbing eats range faster than the trip meter suggests. Carrying a Mobile Connector plus the right adapter for a 14-50 or TT-30 outlet turns a campground pedestal into a viable overnight top-up.
- Underbody and paint protection. Rocks and construction debris get kicked up. Mud flaps and a rocker-panel film are cheap next to a respray.
The Bottom Line
FSD (Supervised) handled a road that had almost none of the inputs it's designed around, and it did it without drama. That's a real data point about how far the system has come. It also needed a human twice in one mile — for a pass it wouldn't make and a pedestrian it saw late.
Both things are true at once, and both point the same direction: hands ready, eyes up, and a well-stocked frunk. That's the combination that makes a dirt-road detour fun instead of memorable for the wrong reasons.
