500 Hard Miles in a BMW iX3: Why Range Anxiety Is Starting to Feel Outdated

Roughly 220 miles out, slightly more on the return. His conclusion after about 500 hard miles in a BMW iX3? Range anxiety is starting to feel like a leftover worry.

What makes the write-up worth reading isn't just that the car finished the trip — he already knew it would. It's that he didn't have to drive like a hypermiler to make it happen.

The Numbers From the Road

The car was an iX3 xDrive50 with a 108.7-kWh battery. Day one started with 97% charge and an indicated 353 miles (568 km) of range. For context, the European WLTP figure is 500 miles (805 km), while the EPA rates the U.S. version at up to 434 miles (698 km).

  • Midway, day one: 112 miles covered at 3.31 mi/kWh (18.8 kWh/100 km), mostly extra-urban driving at 62 mph with a short highway stint.
  • End of day one: 217.5 miles covered, 3.53 mi/kWh (17.6 kWh/100 km) average, and 40% battery remaining — with an estimated 173 miles still available.
  • Day two, before the twisty stuff: around 4.44 mi/kWh (14 kWh/100 km) on the slow-speed cruise toward the Transfăgărășan.
  • After roughly 100 miles of mountain driving — including climbing about 5,200 feet of elevation twice — the battery still showed a reassuring charge level.

That day-two efficiency figure is the eye-opener. Nedelea points out it's "remarkable for a heavy, dual-motor SUV with a huge battery weighing over 5,000 pounds (2.3 tons), 463 hp, and the kind of acceleration that can give you whiplash."

He Could Have Skipped the Overnight Charge

With 40% left and 173 estimated miles on the display at the overnight stop, Nedelea genuinely considered refusing the overnight charge and attempting the return leg on the same battery.

It probably could have done it, but only if I behaved myself: lower speeds, gentle acceleration and perhaps no air conditioning. That sounded considerably less interesting than attacking an empty Transfăgărășan the following morning.

That's the tradeoff most of us actually face on a road trip — and it's telling that the choice was "do I want to have fun, or do I want to skip a charging stop," not "will I make it." He plugged in, got the car back at 98% with a newly optimistic 437-mile (703-km) prediction based on the previous day's efficiency, and went to enjoy the mountain.

Why the Efficiency Was So Good

Two things stand out from the route. First, this was mostly open-road cruising on national roads and highway stretches at moderate speeds — 62 mph, not 80. Speed is still the single biggest lever on EV efficiency, and the iX3's numbers reflect a driver holding a sane pace, not crawling. Second, mountain roads give back. The climb costs you, but the descent regenerates a meaningful chunk of it, which is why two runs up a 5,200-foot pass didn't gut the battery.

Worth noting: BMW's own record run with the iX3 covered over 620 miles (1,000 km) on a single charge, from Hungary to Germany, with range left over. Nedelea deliberately didn't chase that, driving the car "as if it were a combustion car and not always with efficiency in mind." The real-world number is the more useful one for the rest of us.

It's Also Just a Good BMW

The handling notes are a nice bonus for anyone cross-shopping. Nedelea says the iX3 "hides its considerable mass well around the bends," resists understeer, and responds to accelerator inputs mid-corner. The low-mounted battery kills much of the top-heavy feel you'd expect from a 5,000-pound SUV. His verdict: it's more pleasant to drive than the combustion X3.

What This Means for How You Pack

Here's the practical takeaway for your own trips. If range anxiety is fading, the thing that actually derails an EV road trip is no longer the battery — it's the small stuff at the edges. A charging stop you can't use because the connector doesn't match. A cabin that gets miserable on hour six. A tire issue 40 miles from the nearest town.

  • Adapter coverage. Mixed routes mean mixed charging networks. Carrying the right adapter for your car turns a dead stop into a working one — the single highest-value item in the trunk.
  • A portable Level 1/2 charger. Overnight stops are where the real charging happens on a multi-day trip, and a hotel or guesthouse outlet is often all you need to start the next day near full — exactly the scenario in this trip.
  • Roadside and tire gear. Mountain roads and rough shoulders are hard on tires, and EVs frequently ship without a spare. A compact inflator and a tire repair kit belong in the frunk.
  • Cabin comfort for long legs. Sunshades, seat and headrest support, and organized storage matter more when you're doing 220 miles in a stretch rather than a commute.
  • Cargo organization. Trunk and frunk organizers keep cables from tangling with luggage — a small thing that saves real frustration at every stop.

The Bottom Line

The story here isn't that a long-range EV completed a long drive. It's that the driver made no compromises to do it — no coasting, no A/C rationing, no route built around chargers — and still ended each leg with comfortable margin. That's the shift. Planning a trip around charging is quickly becoming planning a trip around where you want to stop anyway.
