InsideEVs contributor and State of Charge host Tom Moloughney put the new Bolt through his well-known constant-70-mph highway range test. The result: 243 miles on a full charge, with the instrument cluster still showing 1% and an estimated 2 miles of range left.

The 2027 Bolt is rated at 262 miles combined and 232 miles on the EPA highway cycle. That means the real-world 70-mph run came in 11 miles above the EPA highway figure and 19 miles below the combined number — an impressive showing, considering the EPA highway procedure never even exceeds 60 mph.

The run took place on the New Jersey Turnpike, where Moloughney does the majority of his highway tests — light early-morning traffic and plenty of charging options nearby. He noted he could probably have squeezed out a couple more miles, but chose to stop while it was safe, since the Bolt had already started limiting power output.
Speed Really Does Kill Range
Here's the part every EV owner should tattoo on the inside of their eyelids. Earlier this year, the YouTube channel EV Motoring ran a similar Bolt at 75 mph in comparable weather. Average efficiency dropped to 2.8 mi/kWh and real-world range fell to just 197 miles.
Five extra miles per hour cost roughly 46 miles of range — nearly a 19% hit. That's not a rounding error; that's an extra charging stop.

As a commuter and occasional road-tripper, it's a genuinely strong value — though General Motors reportedly doesn't plan to keep it in the lineup long-term.
Getting More Out of Whatever You Drive
The Bolt test is a reminder that range is something you manage, not just something you buy. A few practical habits — and a little gear — go a long way:
- Check tire pressure regularly. Moloughney set the tires to the manufacturer's recommended spec before testing, and for good reason. Underinflated tires quietly drain range on every trip. A compact digital inflator in the trunk pays for itself in efficiency and peace of mind.
- Back off the right pedal on long hauls. Dropping from 75 to 70 mph made a 46-mile difference in these tests. On a road trip, that can be the difference between one charging stop and two.
- Use efficient climate settings. The test car ran its climate system in the most efficient mode. Cabin conditioning is one of the biggest non-driving loads on any EV battery.
- Carry the right adapters. Real-world range is only half the equation — charger availability is the other half. Keeping the correct adapter for your car and the networks along your route means fewer detours and less range anxiety.
- Keep roadside basics onboard. A jump/emergency pack, tire repair kit, and reflective triangles matter more when you're running a battery down to 1% on the highway.
